But along with all these positive technology offered us, “technology also takes away from interpersonal communication and interactions” with people around us. We use technology as a “security blanket” to occupy ourselves in a situation that is not very interesting, or sometimes, as an excuse to interact with other people. The author, Brittany, asked us to engage in a conversation to someone you do not know without the use of technology, just a human to human conversation. And see how that that is different from communicates with someone through…

As technology becomes a more influential part of human society, questions are raised considering its impact on society. Clive Thompson’s article, Smarter than You Think: How Technology Is Changing Our Minds for the Better, addresses this issue by stating that technology has a positive effect on society. Jenna Wortham’s article, I Had a Nice Time with You Tonight. On the App., presents a similar argument, but takes a different approach, by making her argument more grounded in everyday life. Thompson’s analysis of how technology positively affects humanity can help shed light on Wortham’s observations about present day technology’s positive effects on communication.…

We were once a communal species, hunting, gathering, and foraging for the benefit of ourselves and those around us. Although we moved away from a society formed on the mutual needs for survival we continue the practice of asking our neighbors for help when we are knees deep in a cookie recipe, stranded without eggs. However even this once commonplace practice of neighborly interaction is developing into a thing of the past, a mindset derived on mutual need has devolved into one centered solely on each individual. Our “We” mentality has been transfigured into a mindset precariously fixated on “me and mine”. As technology continues to develop, we dive deeper into the abyss of apathetic behavior, favoring a conversation through text than face to face human interaction, or liking a picture of a newborn on Facebook instead of holding that newborn in person.…

The world was a place where you had to interact with one another. A place where letters had to be written, and if you wanted to talk to your friends it had to be at a public place. However, with technology advancing so much there is little to no communication between people. Everything is now done online, there is no more social skills, only technology skills. In Ian Bremmer’s “Democracy in Technology”, he wrote about how technology has helped us bring the world together as one.…

Most people at my school have their own or at least one computer or device they use in school and at home. Technology has taken over in many ways and used for a variety of things, but it has also dulled social senses, decreased contact with community and, at times, can make interaction with others feel unusual and awkward. We now live in a place where its weird to show up at someones door without calling or texting first because thats the new normal. Many jobs are done over the internet and made much easier, but the more we sit on the computer the more we are wasting our lives not being active and social with others face to face. While access to tremendous amount of information has increased the validity of that information needs to be questioned because of the amount of incorrect…

Does Technology Allow Relationships to Thrive? Sitting at the dinner table with my family, all that is heard is the clinking of utensils against our plates, some obnoxious chewing coming from my younger brother, and the beeps and rings of multiple phones. More texting, tweeting, instagraming, and the use of technology occurs at the dinner table than actual conversation. My family went from asking about each other’s days and asking how school and work are going to not even looking up from their phones.…

Sherry Turkle elaborates on how technology has impacted society in both the book, Alone Together, and the video, Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age. Turkle’s general argument is that the advancement of technology reduces our empathy as well as gives a misconception of connectivity. In both the book and video, she provides evidence that this is actually true.…

Weinstein and Lejoyeux attempt to define internet addiction in this article. The part of the definition which I found to mirror my thoughts was that internet addicts “may use the Internet for extended periods, isolating themselves from other forms of social contact, and focus almost entirely on the Internet rather than broader life events.”…
