With the many advances in technology it has greatly benefited the medical field as we know it. Technology has brought the medical field things as simple as electric thermometers to things like the Sonograms. Now that our technology is more advanced we are able to have the ability to cure certain sicknesses, help control diseases, and even detect cancer soon enough to eliminate death. The more discoveries we make the quicker we will be able to find cures for things like cancer, Alzheimer’s, and HIV. Through the years, our life expectancy rate has risen thanks to advances such as immunizations, CT and MRI scans, as well as education on the spread of diseases. Although, all of these advances have been great and really helped our society, I would like to specifically focus on the technology known as an MRI. MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging, which is an imaging system that uses a magnetic field in order to create pictures of certain tissues in the body. According to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, this machine uses “radiofrequency waves, powerful magnets and a computer” in order to “distinguish between normal and diseased tissue” (CTCA). The first ever MRI was created by a professor named Raymond Damadian in 1977, the original MRI machine is now on display at the Smithsonian museum. The procedure consists of you lying in a tube surrounded by two different magnets. The procedure takes about 30 minutes to an hour and a half. You must lye as still as possible…
