“Digital Distractions in the Classroom: Student Classroom Use of Digital Devices for Non-Class Related Purposes” is an article explaining the findings of Bernard McCoy; faculty member at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In his article, McCoy has pointed out many studies that showcase the rapid growth of technology use amongst young adults as well as the increase of use and availability of technology for students. The use of technology can be a great educational tool in the classroom but when used for non-educational purposes the technology is detrimental to student learning. This study looked to reinforce other studies that the use of digital devices such as, “smart phones, tablets, and laptop computers” (McCoy 1) for non-class purposes …show more content…
If educators are aware of the issues regarding digital distraction in the class and how it negatively impacts the way students learn they can enact policies and procedures to limit distractions. These limitations may have negative feedback in the beginning but students will learn to appreciate it as they will better understand and learn more from their courses and get a better bang for their buck. Professors can decide what ways and when it is appropriate to bring in digital technology while appreciating the “old-school” teaching methods and procedures such as taking notes with pen and paper or handing out physical assignment sheets instead of all aspects being on a digital …show more content…
Every class I am taking this semester has a policy against the use of phones, tablets, and computer during class time unless permitted by the teacher or if there is some need to use the device from an accessibility standpoint. At first these policies annoyed me as having the ability to use my laptop in class can be helpful when needing to send out a time-sensitive e-mail or want to look up information correlated to what is being taught in class. Although I can admit that in courses where technology is allowed it has caused a distraction from learning for me and I have missed out or done worse in a class because of it. This semester not being able to use technology has brought an increase in my attention and understanding of my classes and created a better learning experience for myself. Although I can still admit to attempting to fight boredom during a class as I will check my smartphone under a table to look at Facebook or send an e-mail. I think my generation is addicted to technology and staying connected because we are aware and know that using it so much isn’t helping our education but we continue to do it anyway whether that is due to habit or addiction. This article as well as all of the policies put in place this year have made me a better student and helped regain my focus and attention in and out of the

The article, “Why Laptops in Class Are Distracting America’s Future Workforce” was written by Timothy D. Snyder in 2010. His purpose in writing this article was to persuade professors against having laptops in the classroom because he feels they are a distraction. The arguments Snyder uses against laptops in classrooms are, they distract students’ attention, students miss out of the best part of American life, and he generalizes that this lack of attention will spill over into the workplace. Snyder discusses various online chatting forums such as Skype, Gchat, or iChat that students are engaged in on their laptops during class.…

I can’t tell you how many times a day I hear teachers tell students to put their phones away in class or how many times I see full lunch tables where every student is on his/her phone. I am not as consumed in my electronics as many of my peers and it always baffled me as to why, when surrounded by friends and classmates, many students’ still felt the need to connect with others online. I now understand that just a teachers use “busy work” simply to fill their students’ time, the students use their electronics. I now find it extremely ironic when I think back to my sophomore year science teacher. He gave out more work than all of my other sophomore teachers combined.…

In this article I thought the responses from the teachers were very interesting. I thought they would’ve agreed that technology helped the students more, but instead they felt technology was the cause of slowness. This article made me notice that not everybody uses technology as a way to improve in education, but sometimes a distraction. Because I too, sometimes get distracted by technology, I can see why they see technology as an obstacle for education. Especially because we are allowed i pads at school it puts the idea of the useage of technology into a different view.…

The classroom is neatly decorated, not too distracting to the students. It is decorated so that the students feel at ease and in a community like setting. Each hallway has a community meeting area in the middle for the classes to come out in to and use as a meeting area. Many teachers use this area as a celebration area by allowing students to lounge out and read during free time or their regular scheduled reading period. The classroom is taught mostly by Mrs. Doss herself, one of the special education teachers come into the classroom daily and pull out two specific students for reading.…

For my ethnography I decided to conduct my observations in the J. Murrey Atkins Library, located at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Beginning at 10:34 am, March 1st, I stationed myself at a table almost directly in front of Peet’s Coffee and Tea. Different seating types were visible from my occupied location, including bar stools, booths, round coaches and metal chairs; making this the best area to take note of my surroundings. It could be perceived instantly that the majority of students were preoccupied with their laptops. I wish to acknowledge the fact that online courses are common thus laptops are going to be necessary in order to complete assignments.…

The problem, today, is that with the technology the students have a toy in front of them which is taking their concentration away from the teacher and to the device that they have. The teacher should be the main focus in the room, not the computer or whatever they have. They are even losing focus on what the assignment is.…

The younger generation is glued to the phones. Professors are starting to worry about their students. Students would complain once electronic devices are not allowed in the classroom environment. For instance, “what if I need my calculator for help” or “I need my phone out in case of emergency” are some of the general arguments you hear (D 'Agostino). All Professor D 'Agostino wanted was to be able to show her students that “we can be unplugged from the social media for an hour and fifteen minutes”…

Technology such as the internet and video can certainly be a distraction to students, but if used properly they can be an essential tool for learning. In today's day and age, it would be detrimental to deprive students access to computers and the internet. While they should not be used as the crux for teaching techniques, these technologies have become viable channels through which one may access knowledge. As such, rather than prohibiting the use of these technologies, it would be more effective to teach students how to properly handle and navigate these tools. Computers, the Internet, and other comparable technological developments have become integrated into daily human use.…
