Although it is better for teenagers to communicate with their parents or friends, it has become an issue for schools. In many high schools there are cellphone policies that prohibit the use of any technological equipment such as cellphones, laptops, iPods, etc. Even with these policies many teens do not follow it, which can result in these students not paying attention in class. In college many professors set a cellphone policy as well to avoid interruptions during class and to be able to make sure all students are focusing at all times. Technology is a negative influence on society because it separates individuals from reality. The iPod is an example in which teens use in public to disconnect from the real world.
In the article by Sylvia McDonald, she explains how cellphones have become normal in a college environment, but it has become typical for students nowadays to just whip out their phones during class and not even pay attention. However, In David Carr’s essay “Keep Your Thumbs Still When I’m Talking to You,” he explains what people nowadays normally do at social events and how it reflects on the people surrounding them. In the 21st century, he describes the world as a “digital revolution” where everything is about technology; every second there are new updates or more news feed to scroll down to ( page#). Countless numbers of people are caught up on what other people are doing, rather than what is going on around them. Carr describes many situations in which people are more focused on their phones rather than where they currently are.
