In today’s society, literacy is very vital and is how we are able to communicate and comprehend what others are saying. Having the ability to read and write is a skill that is used daily and something that gets taken for granted. For most people, it is like second nature and they forget that some people are not as fortunate. Illiteracy is a worldwide problem, there is no race, culture or social economic class that is unaffected. Fortunately as technology evolves it helps people who suffer from illiteracy. Technology helped solved some literacy issues for people that have trouble with reading and writing. Unfortunately, everyone does not learn the same way as others. Enunciation, self-awareness and literary awareness are the characteristics of proficient literacy. Enunciation is very important because it does not matter what a person says if no one understands them. Technology has become a permanent fixture in today’s society, it changes the way we communicate with others. Throughout the years, instead of the writing letters to people, we can just shoot them a text. Technology makes communicating quicker and easier than the traditional ways of communication. However, easier does not necessarily mean effective. It is essential that people learn how to take initiative their education and figure out how words work. With the use of technology, it takes away a person’s ability to solve their own problems. For example, someone might need the definition of a word. Instead of going to the dictionary to look the word up, they can go to Google and type in the word and instantly find the definition, words that are similar and the correct to say it. Today, we communicate through social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Through these media sites, people express their every thought and opinion for others to see. It also shows the displays how literate people are. Among the years, people have changed the way we speak and how we express ourselves. For example, slang words are ways to express how we feel about something else. For instance, “bad” use to mean something not good or unpleasant. Now “bad” can be used as a compliment for something great or spectacular. Technology can have a negative effect on literacy, because on social media people tend to write how they talk. This means that people have no regards to using proper grammar, punctuation or using words in the right context. From personal experience, I have witnessed people on Facebook not know the difference between “there”, “there’re” and “their”. Common mistakes like that happen daily on social media and there is no one to correct them, therefore they keep doing it. Simple mistakes that can easily be fixed are constantly ignored and it effects how people view
