In a world where technology can make a harmless text about a duck turn into a vulgar message not appropriate for a child, can we really call technology smart? Is it now a human or shall I say iHuman that can take on being-like characteristics? No, it’s not. Social media combined with other forms of technology are a timesucking abyss in our lives, “compulsive viewers use television as a distraction, an escape from unhappy lives or unhappy parts of an otherwise tolerable lives” (Rodmann, p. 268). Technology and it’s sidekick, social media, take up too much of our time, create poor social habits and they force teens’ self-esteem to be based on what’s going on in a completely online society.

Seriously, is it necessary that one tweet while they’re talking? The dependence on this online society is hindering our ability to communicate face to face with the people around us. First, guess how many citizens walking down the street are on their phones? Doing so would be an impossible feat. Generally, while walking on a college campus one will find the masses calling, listening to music, combing through messages, scrutinizing social media as well as possibly playing a video game. Now that it’s been realized how high that number actually is think of all the things they aren’t doing. There is very few things that the population isn’t doing while they are absorbed in the content of their phones. The main one however is that they are not interacting with the world around them. Teenagers should not be advertising and marketing for companies for free when they should be hanging out with friends, exploring or doing schoolwork. In my mind, school is suffering the most as teens become more concerned with the number of likes they get rather than the number of “A”s. One must remember that society is not based on the amount of likes one gets. I am not concerned about the culture until we as a whole are concerned about such
