Technology Affecting Our Kids
Does technology (cell phones, computers, tablets, and x-box) negatively affect children’s health. Some people are all for technology for children, from little ages up to teenagers. But is it affecting our child’s social skills, attention, giving them information overload, decision making and memory. With all these, counteracting influence on how technology affects our children. Many people are for technology and many are against technology. Some think technology is a great tool to help children learn; while others think that it takes away from children’s social skills. Many people use technology to communicate instead of using face to face talking or any social skills. “Depression, sleep deprivation, social anxiety, aggression, Internet addition, social isolation and susceptibility to the influence of online advertising have all been noted as a potential consequence of adolescent social media usage (Farber).” Many young people are replacing face to face experiences that are vitally important to the development of a child’s social skills. Time being spent on technology is time not being spent elsewhere including participating in social activities and communicating face-to-face with family and friends. Face-to-face interaction (specifically eye contact and pointing) is crucial when teaching children about social interaction and the world around them. Children aren’t getting the practice of having two-way conversation, for example, or learning how to negotiate differences. Too much technology can impact the development of other important social skills, such as: expression of emotions, how to deal with conflict and communication. Children need to learn how to play and get along with others and to have an imagination without the help of technology. Children need to limit their technology time and spend more time talking to each other and interacting with people. Children need to learn to play pretend or share and enjoy nature, instead of being glued to technology. Parents need to make sure they spend quality, “electronic free” time with family, so they can experience the difference between an electronic connection and a personal connection. Both forms are important for communication, but nothing replaces face-to- face with family and friends.“Four critical factors necessary to achieve healthy child development are movement, touch, human connection, and exposure to nature (The Impact of Technology on The Developing Child.)” With this, being said it’s crucial to limit children’s technology
