Technological Advancement In Society

Every year there are new technological advances made. People invent new ways to tell time, to predict the weather, and to get from one place to another faster. Finding new cures for various diseases and illnesses are examples of how technological advances can be good, but that is not always the case. Advances in technology can hinder society because man becomes dependent on those technologies, takes the technology for granted, and does not gain as much education and he prides himself on. The technology in the world can be a good thing, but people can become too dependent on them. Emerson says, “He has got a Geneva watch, but he has lost the skill to tell the hour by the sun,”(2). Since almost everything in today’s society has some form of a clock on it, no one is taught how to tell time like people used to by the sun and moon. Even though Emerson says man needs to work a revolution in his education, it does not mean technology is always better for society’s education. In today’s society if someone needs to know about a current event they usually do not reach for a newspaper. Instead, society reaches for a computer or smartphone to search online. Reading on an electronic causes people to simply skim through what they are reading because there is a lot more useless information, and can lead to missing the important stuff. Studies show that people tend to read text differently online than a newspaper, so we do not fully comprehend the concept of what is being read. Another reason for that, besides skimming, is because people tend to try to find the biggest piece of information online, but the human brain can not process everything that is being read.
