Things such as surveillance/ digital cameras, portable light sources, and lasers are three of the many devices used to identify key aspects on a crime scene. Introduced in 1960 cameras were only used to monitor Thai royalty, these cameras were the first steps to something big. Once updated cameras back then didn’t have any way to store memory and were only used to monitor areas. After multiples updates over the decades, in the early 90s surveillance cameras finally received an update that not only recorded and stored data, but also allowed multiple recordings at once. Investigators can use surveillance cameras to their advantage by seizing recordings in order to obtain any evidence that it may hold. Recordings may hold evidence such as what happen, if any witnesses were present, and most importantly the identity of the person. Digital cameras help on a crime scene by being able to capture photographs of the scene, and if necessary digital cameras may also record the crime scene so photos are just a second option. Photos along with notes are used by investigators to recall scenes from the crime. Photos can help speed up investigations because they can be wirelessly emailed and developed in just minutes. Old black and white photos from Polaroids took time to be developed, and if needed getting multiples of the pictures meant you would have to take multiples. Although cameras may be a big help to officers and investigators they also can help criminals achieve their goals.
