At Dartmouth College an email went around the department about why a professor wanted laptops banned in classrooms, Dan Rockmore in his article “The Case for Banning Laptops in the Classroom” speaks about why he agrees with his colleague and his reasoning. I agree with Rockmore’s theory on the disadvantages of having laptops in the classroom because they can be the cause of distraction, disrespect, and non-integration.
From personal experience, I agree with Dan Rockmore that laptops in the classroom should be banned because they are distracting. While in the classroom, I have caught myself multiple times on social media, online shopping, or other websites rather than …show more content…
One side of the classroom is the laptop students and the other half is the students who note take with paper and pencil. They think that by doing this is will help the students who are using paper not be distracted by the laptop screens that could be in front of them. Also in the Rockmore’s article, Dan talks about how they could “kill the switch”, which would be turning off Wi-Fi in specific rooms restricting students from being able to be on the Internet, in turn making them focus on what is going on in class (Rockmore para 10). Unfortunately, technology is so advanced now a days that people have personal hotspot; which is Wi-Fi you can connect from your phone to your laptop. Technology is becoming such a major component and enhancement of the classroom that it almost makes it impossible to regulate, but I believe that laptops in class are posing more as a distraction than an …show more content…
After all, if a student isn’t putting in the effort why should the teacher? The teacher is there to teach students who want to learn; it is not there job to force the knowledge into the students’ brain.
I agree with Rockmore’s theory on the disadvantages of having laptops in the classroom. They can be the cause of distraction which eventually leads to bad grades in the class and it may even have a negative effect on others in the classroom. This is not fair to fellow students and the professor. Banning laptops has a lot of advantages but professors do not know from the start each students study techniques in the classroom so banning laptops is a huge controversy around colleges. Overall I believe that if we did live in a world where laptops were banned in classrooms, I do think that scores on test and assignments would increase because students would be more focused during class and actually listen to the professors.
