Technical communications is a key component to the success of engineers in the field. Studies find that around fifty percent of an engineer’s work constitutes communication duties. (Brandt & Prescott, 2013) These duties must be acknowledged and bestowed onto students in their college career in order for them to be prepared for the field. Through the use of technical written, oral, and visual communications, engineers can bring designs to life. These communications translate into technical documents consisting of: technical memos, emails, presentations, design reports, notes, proposals, site reports, provisions, and contracts. In an interview, he addressed the importance of the constant need for oral speeches to “sell your ideas.” As an engineer, you must have the ability to conduct speeches to small groups of individuals as well as large groups consisting of many fields of expertise. He then went on to explain his interpretation of an “elevator speech.” Engineers need to have the ability to speak clearly, concisely, and efficiently. “If you don’t have enough time to convince your boss of your idea from the time you enter into an elevator at ground level, to the time you get to the thirtieth floor, your speech isn’t worth …show more content…
Engineers spend about twenty-three percent of their time reading, interpreting, and responding to technical materials and data. (Brandt & Prescott, 2013) Success in this field is related by the ability to use and comprehend visuals. (Wolfe, 2009) When information is displayed in a “visual pattern,” it projects the data efficiently. (Lannon & Gurak, 2014, p.246) Furthermore, data visualization and numbers are a key ingredient in engineering sciences as engineers stress the importance of the ability to be able to “interpret, draw conclusions from, and explain possible errors” in data. When communicating in CE1 the process that worked especially well is the “medium.” We were able to sit in a group and use verbal communication to have an open discussion. I knew that the Solders were interested in learning this additional duty, because I was receiving good questions on the processes. We were able to open up the briefing slides and discuss why the bosses needed to see information on a slide and the format that we might need to change in the future. The communication process that failed in CE2 is, “decoding.” Because the Air Guard does not see the importance, or relevance on why we need to go through this accreditation process, during the meeting we ran into many barriers to the recommendations that were proposed that influenced…

Communication is an important skill that many lack or simply fail to perform from time to time. This is not a simple skill as it does not merely consist of exchanging words to another person, but it requires that the person that is sending the message, send it clear, in such a way that others understand what was intended to be said. Being this, a valuable skill, specifically on health care teams, it is the main reason why as part of the Interprofessional Skills and Team-based Healthcare II course they have been training us on how to effectively work and communicate with other healthcare professionals. As part of the course they gave us a brief case that narrated how a patient arrived to the emergency room unresponsive, with uncontrolled blood…

How many public speeches have you heard? Since I was a kid, I have been a fan of great public figures making historical speeches, especially during a time of crisis. Notably, one of my favorite public speeches was given on April 3, 1968, by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., entitled, “I’ve Been to the Mountain Top”, which was the very last speech he gave and is considered an iconic moment in American history. Keep in mind, Dr. King was assassinated the following day. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech, motivated individuals and intensified their passion and hope for equality, in a room full of disadvantage African-Americans.…
