In the 2014 article, “Why Scientists Should Embrace the Liberal Arts,” former Cornell president, David J. Skorton, argues that scientists need to find a better way to communicate their knowledge with the public. Skorton mentions that the general public often has a difficult time believing what scientists try to tell them because they cannot comprehend their jargon. He believes this is happening because scientists lack the skills and education needed to effectively communicate their ideas to the public. Overall, the main goal of Skorton’s article is to display the disconnect between the public and scientists. Based on the content of the paper we can infer that Skorton’s targeted audience is not only educators and scientists, but also the general…

At the beginning of the course I thought I was an “okay” writer. A lot of times I didn’t realize the mistakes that I was making even after reviewing my writings myself because I would correct these small detail in my head as I read loud. What I noticed that I did a lot in my writings before was use “you” a lot, frequent verb tense errors, and I also had to get use to using the Purdue OWL APA format. Over the past weeks my writings have gotten better from very minimal verb tense errors if any and I think that I have the hang of the APA format. To continue strengthening my writing I will make use of the thesaurus more often to minimize “clutch” words or repetition and increase my vocabulary.…

Prior to enrolling in this course, I have not really taken any class that was strict about citing and referencing sources in APA format. It has been a challenge for me, but through feedback from my instructors I have been able to make headway. Another weakness I see in myself is posting my assignments at the 11th hour. One of my strengths is my willingness to learn new things and this class has afforded me that. Through accredited websites, and reading Masters, I have been exposed to new information I never once new.…

I had no idea what APA format was or how to cite properly. However, the APA citations links that my professor provided were very useful and helped me be successful with the rest of my essays. The videos guided me step by step and were very simple to understand other different type of formats such as MLA, and Chicago. Another resource that was very helpful, were the online class discussions. Online discussions not only helped me interact with my classmates, but helped me broaden my knowledge about the material.…

Entering graduate school, I have personally had mixed thoughts on taking a writing course for my first semester. The increased demand for scholarly writing skills in the healthcare profession allows for improvement in many nursing positions. “Some individuals take to writing easily and with enjoyment”, but “for others the process is quite difficult” (Dexter, 2000). I am one to admit, for me, writing is not effortless. I feel that I have room for advancement, not only with APA formatting, but with writing skills, as a whole.…

Throughout this course, writing took more than just writing about what you read. Here I learned to process all the information that needs to be processed and come up with some way to get it out on paper. With writing I have learned that vocabulary and grammar are two very affective sides to it. With grammar I have learned when to end a sentence. Working on grammar for my writing also allowed me to learn, when the time came for me to use punctuation and extend the sentence.…
