I learned how to listen to a speaker, gather important information from the speech, and develop that information into a formal summary of the speech. I have written summaries on speakers in past courses, but practicing this is a great review and you get feedback on your writing from multiple different critics. As mentioned earlier I have written multiple memorandums for Technical Communications, as well as business letters, and online writing format material. I have written many MLA style papers throughout my education but not much work on large analytical reports, which is a practice I learned in this course. One of the most important areas I learned skills in was writing resumes and other job-search materials. I wrote a general crude resume in a freshman seminar class, but wrote a more developed resume in Technical Communications, as well as a cover letter. The resume I wrote in Technical Communications is more formal, updated, and improved structurally. This is one piece of material that will be used for certain in the future and probably numerous times. Through more than one of my past classes I have given speeches to develop my speaking skills and dealing with other people. This could be online “letters” or printed letters to be mailed to a recipient. It will also be helpful to know how to talk to/work with different types of audiences, as well as keeping in mind possible ethical issues. Another workplace area where Technical Communications has prepared me is producing outlines for either written or oral reports. I now have plenty of business letters to refer to when I am required to write one in the workplace. The information we learned and covered in interviews with follow-up letters will be beneficial when applying for a job and preparing for an interview. These skills and knowledge I have gained will most certainly be helpful to me as I progress in my career and continue my education. Some minor parts in the class that we only briefly went over will not be as consequential as subjects such as the analytical report and resume with cover letter, but this does not mean they were useless. Depending on a person’s Major and background some parts of the course may be more useful to them than others. Topics like documentation and proper in-text or “Works cited” citation were less important because these have been drilled into students since they started English education; but is still good to review because you use it a lot in Technical Communications and in all
