Tear Out Your Hair

Every mother has those moments when she feels like tearing her hair out. Every one. Even that one mom you know who always looks put together with her expensive makeup and un-wrinkled clothes feels like ripping out her immaculately coiffed chignon and raging like the Hulk every now and then.

Today I present to you: 10 Things to Remember When You're Ready to Tear Out Your Hair
1. The same child who just colored on the wall with nail polish also gives the best hugs, the sweetest voice, and tells you they love you in a way only they can.

2. God gave us an amazing immune system. Yes, children shouldn't eat toilet freshening tabs, but they're also non-toxic. Please don't ask me how I know this.

No one can keep boys from turning everything into a gun or a sword. Good try, mom, but the male psyche is beyond your control.

5. Water can be cleaned up. So can milk, juice, crayon, sharpie, nail polish, blood, vomit, and poop. If you don't have the arsenal of cleaning supplies down yet, you will soon. Messes are not the end of the world.

6. Everything takes twice as long (or more) with kids. It's not you; it's life. Plan accordingly, and know that everyone else who's ever been a parent gets it.

7. It's a universal rule that when you're ready to leave somewhere disaster will strike. Someone will need to spend 30 minutes on the toilet, a diaper will explode, or you will lose your keys. See #6.

8. It's not your fault when a cascade of mishaps make your day seem like a bad sitcom. Some days are just like that. Even in Australia. Just breathe. You can do this.

9. Pray. Breathe. Give kisses and hugs, laugh, tease, or growl big bear growls in play. Drink coffee, or tea, or have a nightcap after bedtime. Enjoy the breeze, the sunshine, the snow, the leaves outside, the warm water from your faucet, or the super soft towels you paid too much for. Whatever you can do with joy, do it. It makes the bad things seems less awful when you can remember all the good things you have

She also talks about neatness, or clutter phobia usually comes from how parents raise their children. Usually its done with parents telling their kids to clean their rooms, or reading them books that encourages cleanliness. She also talks about the extremes that parents go to and like Schorr says, “taking the message too far, associating neatness with a quality required to be a good person.”…

Our society has focused on cleanliness as a means to eliminate pathogens in our living environment and perhaps this fixation stems from the ill effects of past experience: where less than sanitary conditions would often result in life-threatening disease.
