How Does Teamwork Affect The Workplace

Superior Essays
This activity is based on teamwork and how we would work together based on our personalities. We were divided into groups of six and given random material to build a shelter that was to withstand a fan in a short period of time. We were given paper, rubber bands, blindfolds, toothpicks and post-it notes. Two of the members were assigned leader roles while the rest of us where the workers. Leaders could not use their hands while the workers were blink folded and could only use their hands and ears. I was a worker and had to listen to exactly what the leaders had to say and do exactly what they told us to do. I steered away from what my team was doing and created my own mini size shelter. I did this because the rest of my team members did not know what to do. Overall, the activity was not a success. We tried to combine the individual shelters together at the end, but it did not withstand the dangerous forces of the fan. I believe that it was not successful because leaders did not have a plan on what to do which ultimately affected the rest of us. At the beginning, I thought that this would be a simple task and we would definitely have no problems especially with my background in Engineering. I did mini projects like this in the past like when I built a bridge out of popsicle sticks and seeing the amount of weight it can withstand compared to other groups. I guess that was more of an …show more content…
I do not like listening to other people that don’t know what they are doing and are guiding you to fail. I learned that I need to take charge and make sure I verbalize what we need done. Through the IPE Core Competency, I gained confidence in myself. I know now that I’m made to be a leader and not everyone is a leader. I also gained how to lead through the mistake the leaders made. In this study, grounded theory was used to explore nurses' and physicians' experiences with collaboration in order to understand the process intrinsically. I would like to continue working on all the leadership practices as I proceed in my career, although I would like to focus on the two where the LPI has demonstrated my weakness. Working as a physician in the future, the Challenge the Process practice will be an important aspect of my job because it will allow me to develop new and innovative methods of patient-centered care. It will also allow me to collaborate and engage in dialogue with employees pushing for change, be more flexible and be willing to step out of my comfort zone.…

Leadership is the action of leading a group of people or organization. This doesn’t mean you have to work unaccompanied. Being a leader is a big responsibility and from time to time you can’t do it alone. Many leaders have a partner or a crew to help them along their journey. This is another quality called joint effort, which Odysseus and his crew had great familiarity with.…

Project Citizen has been a wonderful experience. That has taught me many things that I can apply to my daily life that I may have never even thought of if I didn’t do Project Citizen. Even though I had a great time doing this project, I learned most people like to do less work and especially if someone is willing to pick up their slack for a better grade. When working in a team it gets a little hard to find motivation unless you all talk and make a clear plan of what people are doing for the group and when they need to have it done. There were times when our group lost focus really easy and we found ourselves scrambling with things that could have been done if we would have just sat down and defined a day that we wanted it done.…

The activity myself and my group members participated was an exercise that introduced ourselves and helped give our classmates an idea what we think about a certain topic and needs that we find important. The group exercise was to think about being on a tropical island with no escape, and bringing five important things to that island. Some important things that I thought I should bring was a book called “Lord of the Flies”, a movie called “Fools Rush In”, makeup, a boat, and a bathing suit. My group and I collaborated and came up with bringing a book called “Survival Guide”, a Raft, a telescope to navigate the stars for location, and timing,a guitar for playing music, and cosmetic products because hygiene is important.…

Teamwork in this particular task was straightforward and we had no problems in terms of participation and contribution. Having said that there was also no 'social loafing ' within my team, as Latane et al., 1979 argued was a problem in teams, whereby people were louder individually than they were in groups (chapter 6, pg. 180). Whether you are a part of a social group or on a group project for school or work everyone has the want and need to be included, when group members don’t feel like they have fully been accepted in to the group they can become withdrawn and anti-social which would lead them to not be a contributing part of the team. Having a diverse group of people on a team can help a team more effectively and efficiently reach their common goal. If everyone on the team had the exact same life experiences, was the same age and the same culture they more than likely would have the same general way to approach the group’s common goal. Having diversity on the team can help generate more ideas because everyone’s life experiences and cultural differences have helped form the way they think and the way that they solve problems. Roles, needs and diversity affect a group’s teamwork immensely because if members aren’t performing their specific goal and only focusing on a self-centered role the groups work will either multiply for the other members of the group or the group’s common goal might not be met.…

Since we were given the freedom to choose our own teammates to form groups of five, we generally chose to team up with our friends. This resulted in a greater camaraderie within the group. The camaraderie among teammates made us felt that we are all part of the group and each of us held responsibility towards the group. Owing to the mutual understanding between teammates, we got to share and consider each other’s thoughts as well as made important decisions together which reduced a great deal of problems and conflicts within the group.…

We all tried, but I think some of us took the project more seriously than others. Kevin was always late to our meetings event though when we created the team contract we agreed to be punctual unless there was an emergency. I doubt that there was an emergency every single week when we met. I think Amy and myself did most of the work, we had to assign work for Kevin and Shaohui to do otherwise they would not take the initiative to do something unless we asked them to do it which was frustrating because Kevin was supposed to be the project manager and it was his responsibility to make sure that we were doing our part and being the leader of the team. I am not saying that it was all his responsibility because we are all adults and can do our part, but what I am saying is that they were not behaving as adults.…
