On October 13, 2016, I attended the Team Communication Workshop Part II: Handling Difficult People and Situations, presented by Dr. Joanna Wolfe from the Global Communication Center. It was a workshop about how to handle working on a group project with people who might be difficult to work with and how to deal with uncomfortable situations in a professional manner. Dr. Wolfe noted in the beginning that based on the research that she and other GCC staff have conducted, women and minorities in general tend to face problems especially in scenarios where another group member dominates the other group members and the group project in general. The workshop was interactive, so we were presented with different scenarios that we may face in our careers and asked to rate the different kinds of reactions based on how effective we …show more content…
Taking part in this workshop really made me pay more attention to the issues that may come up in my professional career as well as consider how I can improve my interpersonal skills as a whole. As an engineering major, I realize that I will be working in groups most of the time on important projects when I enter the workforce. This group project aspect of engineering is not really emphasized, as most of my courses are technical ones that are not yet project-based. One thing that particularly resonated with me was when Dr. Wolfe pointed out that on average, groups with women members tended to have a higher collective intelligence. I think that she made valid points as to why that is, and I was able to reflect a little bit about how I contribute to the groups that I have been in. In my past experiences, I have worked on engineering and design projects with groups of other students. The different components of strong collaboration style put some of what I learned from those experiences into words. In

My practicum has gotten very busy and interesting these last few weeks I have started vigorously working in the group setting with the clients and even making some decisions on clients transitioning into different levels of care. Working with women really has help me to acquire patients, empathy, and understanding. Most of these women have gone through very traumatic experiences in their past and they bring those issues behaviors they developed to cop into Group . Therefore learning group structure and norms have been really helpful and very important. According to Tuckman’s theory he articulated four stages of group development, which he labeled forming, storming, norming, and performing(Delucia-Waack, 2004).…

In high school, we were constantly being told that we could not work in groups because we would get too loud. In university group work was encouraged so that our professors wouldn't have to do as much marking. During my observations at my CSL there was a lot of group work. Comparing when the students were working on group work to their individual work, the results were polar opposites. The tasks for students was to write down what they knew about 5 sided figures.…

Three and a half months have passed by and my final semester and internship with Working Group on Girls is complete. In the past few weeks it was just a rush on editing the advocacy cards to make sure all grammatical errors and the language was appropriate to be presented for the WGG Membership Meeting. On December 3rd, I presented the advocacy cards. It was a wonderful feeling to feel accomplished to present the cards that have been worked for the past three months with Erica. Everyone was very pleased with the result, the research, and time taken from my schedule to do this.…

I chose your reflections to respond to because I felt that when I read your post that was exactly how I saw this situation as well. These assessments are not tools to be used by anyone. They should be used by professionals who have the training and knowledge to understand the specific assessment. On the other hand practicing counselors should be able to do assessments if they possess all the qualifications. They have to follow all the same guidelines and ethics and graduate from an accredited school in order to get licensed to practice.…

This situation improved my group members and my understanding that it is not easy to deal with some people in the group when there are many different opinions, and it showed us the weakest point of group work- no matter how much effort an individual puts into the group work, every member gets the same mark. Nevertheless, it was a good experience because we had adiscussion, and even if we had difficulties, we found the solution in the end. It helped us to not only to do with a good presentation, butat the same time to improve our skills dealing with other…

I worked in a group with four other people, not only did this experience help me understand, as most group work does, how to work with diverse individuals and ideas but also how topics such as the one we chose, gender identity in public schools, have developed over time. This project highlighted for me how issues today have been impacted by historical beliefs, ideologies and experienced their own ecological system of development. Gender identity was initially seen as an illness to be cured and hidden, then slowly the ideas shifted to be included in the DSM as a diagnosis and I feel now slowly shifting away from the concept of having to conceptualize gender identity and towards the acceptance of diversity. The project was a great way to see…

Collaboration is a big part of the world we reside in. It is extremely difficult to be able to make decisions on your own and go down the route of your own choosing without restriction. We are bounded by different stakeholders and different entities that we have to learn to work with and compromise on certain issues. As an Applied Anthropologist, going into the field and applying it into issues that affect a community one must be ready to work with groups that may have other views and opinions on the situation and effectively and civilly work with one another to improve the conditions of that community.…

Reflection as a Counsellor. This was a learning curve in for me in this course and I enjoyed been the counsellor even though, I was a little worried about this assessment session been that it was my first client assessment. I was mindful of my report, because the context of why the assessment and/or test were administered is important. Gersten (2013) highlights the importance of having competency to administer, score and interpret the result of a test to explain what the scores mean. Otherwise, the sores can be vague and ambiguous to the client with no practical utility.…
