A number of years ago, I started having severe abdominal pain. I made an appointment and the physician informed me that the pain was being caused by a pregnancy that occurred very quickly after a miscarriage. I accepted this information without question. At 31 weeks, I went into preterm labor and spent the next four and a half weeks in and out of the hospital and in and out of labor. My baby was born premature, but was healthy enough to go home the same day I did. At my two week checkup, I stated that the pain was still present and seemed to be getting worse. I was informed that as my uterus shrank, things should get better. It did not. It got worse. For close to four years I went to multiple appointments with multiple doctors, all of which …show more content…

Explain why you think this would be helpful (and therefore prevent errors). *examples of team communication tools: SBAR, Call-Out, Check-Back, CUS Words, Hand-Off, Huddle, Debrief, Two Second Rule, or any communication strategies you find or design*
a. I feel that there were several breaks in the communication in my case. I feel that part of the education provided to the staff/ medical team would be about the CUS words. In my particular case, the clerical team could have used “I am concerned that the physician is not listening to what the patient wants when he asks us to the appointment slot” or “I am uncomfortable changing the appointment slot without the patient’s consent.” The nursing team could have used the same phrases as the clerical team and also used “I do not feel the safety of the patient is being considered when the complaint of pain is not being addressed.” The other physicians could use phrases such as “I am uncomfortable denying a patient a true second opinion” or “I feel the patient’s safety if being compromised due to the lack of testing or exams that have been

As we all know effective communication can play major role in providing safe patient care, higher patient satisfaction and treatment compliance, recovery and healing. Most of the time ineffective communication between health care providers and patients can cause distractions during care delivery and contributes to medical errors and insufficiency. According to Err Is Human and Crossing the Quality Chasm report good communication is necessary to ensure safe and reliable care (Chapman, 2009). After doing my research on communication related errors and training from team STEPPS (Team strategies and tools to enhance performance and patient safety) at Hunterdon Medical center (Healthcare Team Training, 2012). I was lucky enough to be part of the…

Teamwork and communication are very important in any field, but especially in Health care. Team communication is very important to not only those who are working but those who are getting the procedure done (the patient). Without communication, no one would know what is going on, what medicine the patient is receiving, what they were diagnosed with, what the future plans are, and who will be taking part of the plan. Team communication can often be a matter of life and death for the patient that is under the care and supervision of a team. One miscommunication can mean the wrong dosage and something like that could kill someone.…

On October 13, 2016, I attended the Team Communication Workshop Part II: Handling Difficult People and Situations, presented by Dr. Joanna Wolfe from the Global Communication Center. It was a workshop about how to handle working on a group project with people who might be difficult to work with and how to deal with uncomfortable situations in a professional manner. Dr. Wolfe noted in the beginning that based on the research that she and other GCC staff have conducted, women and minorities in general tend to face problems especially in scenarios where another group member dominates the other group members and the group project in general. The workshop was interactive, so we were presented with different scenarios that we may face in our careers and asked to rate the different kinds of reactions based on how effective we…

Team communication and collaboration are very important elements in order to have a successful unit that can achieve its goals effectively. One way we can improve our collaboration and team communication is by having a meal together. Research, from Kevin Kniffin of Cornell University, shows that since eating is such a normal behavior, groups that have meals together regularly tend to be more cohesive teams. During Kevin’s research he found that firefighters who ate together claim they “feel like a family, and [having meals together] creates a focus when members aren’t out on the job”. These elements help the teams that had meals together preform twice as well as teams that don’t; this is why I propose we should have at least one group meal…

There has been a history of poor communication in the medical field that has stemmed from physicians not being able to communicate well. Physicians are having issues trying to use medical terminology and also convey the meaning of the terminology to their patients. Some patients walk away from the doctor 's office feeling as though they still don 't understand what exactly is going on with them. Physicians do not realize that the medical terminology is creating a disconnect between their patients. Communication in the Health Care System is a skill that is necessary for Physicians; however, they lack the ability to listen, speak w/o using medical jargon, and write effectively.…
