Team Captain Research Paper

As I approached my senior year I anticipated becoming a team captain of the cross country girls team, one who pushes the girls, cheers them on during practices and races, and comforts them in their hard times. The team captains I had my other three years inspired me to be better by encouraging me to run faster, giving me quotes before meets, cheering me on at races, and becoming some of my best friends. I looked up to them as a shining example and knew I wanted to carry on the team captain tradition as a dedicated, inspirational, and caring team captain. The opportunity for me to be a team captain came last summer when my cross country coach, Coach Corry, asked me to be a captain as a leader, runner, and example of daily dedication. I enjoyed planning activities for the cross country girls …show more content…
in the summer and after school during the school year I ran alongside team members and guided them on the memorized runs around town. I talked with the team members and learned more about their families, hobbies, and friends. I became good friends with a lot of the girls and understood their pain, frustration, and joy from running. Many of the girl were running for the first time in their lives and improved incredibly throughout the season. I learned a lot about the power of the mind and what people can accomplish as we ran more and more miles together. Once a week we had a team bonding activity where we talked about our running goals, ate spaghetti dinners, played games, and watched movies together. Before each race we gathered all 50 of the girls together and gave out inspirational quotes and advice to the girls After races I’d congratulate them on their performance and comfort them if they had a bad race. I recognized their skills and abilities as well as their strengths and weaknesses. By the end of the season our team had grown so close together we even started an Instagram group to share fun ideas for activities and inspirational running

At some point in time in their development, most people encounter an adult figure, who instills a positive change in their lives. For me, that person was Cindy Scannella--my track and my cross country coach for my first two years of high school. With her unique approach to coaching, Coach Scannella not only gave me the confidence to flourish in the sport and lead my team, but she also gifted me with a love for running. This passion of mine as well as her continual support has carried me through the difficulties of my grandfather’s death, my parents’ divorce, and other strenuous circumstances including the end of her time as my coach. My Cross Country/Track coach is one of the best men I know. He not only betters his runners by teaching us, but he also runs with us. Pushing us to greatness with words of encouragement, he implores us to leave all energy on the course/track and teaches us to be exceptional people outside of running. He expresses to us that no matter what we do, he will always be proud of each member of the team; therefore, our actions can’t change his love for us. That’s why it was devastating when he told us before the past track season, that he would not be able to coach for the remainder of the running season from February until we initiated winter conditioning November.…

Throughout my four years of high school, the seaside community of Narragansett, Rhode Island, has encouraged and nurtured the growth of its youthful inhabitants as students and individuals. The supportive environment and abundant opportunities available for students to pursue their passions and help others consequently benefits the community as a whole. As an athlete, and more specifically, a runner, I have aspired to motivate and encourage young athletes to enjoy the fun and friendships that emerge from being a part of a sports team. During the summer, I volunteered at the Summer Youth Track Series at Narragansett High School. Eager smiles painted the faces of the joyous young runners lining up in heats, ready to run as fast as they can in the 100 meter sprint, throw as far as they can in the turbo javelin, and jump as far as they can in the long jump.…

When I was in fifth grade, I was on my school’s Girls on the Run (GOTR) team. We spent 25 or so weeks training for a 5k race, learning life lessons, and building friendships along the way. For me, the best part was the running, I had a lot of energy growing up and running was a way for me to unleash it. The lessons were, for the most part, fun, interactive activities that tricked us into learning. I can truthfully say GOTR helped shape me into the person I am today and I am forever grateful.…
