With his last chapter, author of, Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science, Atul Gawande states that uncertainty fills the medical field, as even the best doctors in the world have to face situations in which they are unable to provide answers. He describes the case of the death of eight newborns who had the same mother. At the time, doctors thought it was a common newborn syndrome called SIDS but it was later recognized by a detective, who reopened the case, that the mom in fact had murdered almost all of the children. Because the doctors were unable to definitively determine that the mother did not actually smoother her children, it was not until 1999 that she was held accountable Later, Gawande tells of a time that a patient…

First, let’s talk about Abby Payne from Lake Travis HS, her team philosophy is Pride, Passion, and Discipline. I fully agree with her philosophy and seeing that’s how my high school team was run and how I plan on running my team one day. I also somewhat with her practice schedule 3 days a week at 7:30am and 2 at 7:00am with 2 days of tutoring for the team to see teachers. I agree and disagree with this because I feel like if you’re going to allow your team 2 practices at 7:30am the team should be almost ready to perform for the football game that week. I also agree with her worst problem with her team being that that parents are either too involved or not involved enough.…

Julie, great example of how your team has utilized debriefing. When debriefing it is important to cover certain aspects, these aspects that should be covered are emotions, analysis, applications, and summary (Arnold, Dadiz, & Weinschreider, 2013). When evaluating emotions in a team setting it is important to stay in the I or we statements. It seems like the physician that you are working with has done a great job of this by opening the table up for discussion on what the team could have done better by using "we" and by valuing what every member of the team has had to say. One other aspect that you pointed out was that the physician accepted that he was human as well and made a mistake.…

The decisions our team made affected how our team placed in comparison to the other teams in the class. The first day the that simulation began, our team payed close attention to what Dr. Clough was doing and speculated about what his purchases must have been to get his results. This may not have been the most effective way to purchase machines because there was no way to know when his next purchase was going to be. The decisions made were mostly qualitative, and based on prior assumptions. To make decisions easier on the entire group, we decided early on that if a purchase was to be made, consult the group and come to a majority vote.…

There is controversy over how team member heterogeneity influence on team performance. This research would address this question, using transactive memory as mediator. By dividing team member heterogeneity into demography heterogeneity and knowledge heterogeneity, this research would (1) prove transactive memory is playing a mediator role between heterogeneity and group performance; (2) suggest that demographic heterogeneity would negatively affect group performance, while knowledge heterogeneity would positively influence group performance.…

In previous section, we spoke about positive relationship between team diversity and new product development project as organisational slack works as moderator (Chen et al. 2015). However, functional diversity had an indirect negative relationship with team innovation through knowledge sharing when the level of affect-based trust in a team was low; knowledge sharing had a positive relationship with team innovation (Cheung et al. 2016). Therefore, when there is low trust in between team members from diverse functional background, innovation in the team will be relatively lower. Another explanation to high functional diversity does not always translate into high innovative is that team members often hold deep-rooted functional commitments that…

The sustainability team project exposed me to a variety of skills and concepts while dealing with a complex problem, one of them being team conflict. I would like to reflect on this, since my opinion about it has changed, as we progressed through the course. There were various conflicts that occurred during the project, but only one in particular was significant to change my opinion about team conflicts, it was towards the end of the project. When the team was discussing solutions to the complex problem, there was disagreement with the team on what the solution should look like. As, different team members had different opinions and expectations from the project, which led to the conflict within the team.…
