This class involved teaching us eight valuable principles, that would help us prosper in any environment. Each principle was a stepping stone for one another. 1. …accept personal responsibility; seeing themselves as the primary cause of their outcomes and experiences. How have you learned to be responsible? V or C ??

The first stepping stone was accepting personal responsibility. We discussed a creator and a victim mindset. I believe that I have always held myself to a high regard, but it really depends on my feelings and mood. There are days where my pessimism will overpower any accomplishment I have ever made. There are other days where I feel like very good about myself. However, I believe that this course has helped me manage and overcome my pessimistic thoughts. This will be really helpful, because there are days where my pessimism makes me want to give up and quit. But by strengthening my inner guide voice I can defend myself more efficiently, and work towards my goals.

What assignments worked best for you and how could they be improved upon?
I would enjoy the quick writing assignments that we would have after the lesson. They would just allow the information discussed to cement into my brain. The writings were also much easier because, they did not require a structure. Rather it was just thoughts that would float onto paper.

What parts of the text did you like best?
I enjoyed the quotes that would be found in the texts. I found some of the quotes relatable or inspirational.

It would require a great deal of practice and patience, but I believe I could accomplish the state of mind and emotion referred to as "radical forgiveness". For many years I responded to situations as a victim, believing I wasn't good enough or blaming others for my choices. As an adult, I try to assume responsibility but old habits die hard and it is a struggle at times to push the victim away. When I consciously choose to not be a victim it is empowering.…

The difference between having a Creator mindset and having a Victim mindset is the difference between success and failure. In his book, On Course: Strategies for Creating Success in College and in Life, Dr. Skip Downing defines Creators as people who make choices that result in the outcomes they want to achieve. He defines Victims, however, as people who leave their choices to chance, reacting to things that happen in their lives, instead of making things happen, which often has unfavorable results. If I want to have a successful life and achieve my goals, I must adopt the Creator mindset.…

Once assembled in a crowd people lose their ability to reason and their capacity of moral judgment, their suggestibility is increased to a point where they cease to have any will of their own. This is the case in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, where the citizens are constantly kept in a masses to prevent them from thinking. An individual craves rationality and fact, it is their critical habit of mind makes them resistant to the the kind of propaganda that works so well on the majority. It’s the first day of kindergarten and a child walks in through the doors, the child sits down, the teacher walks in, and starts the first lesson. The child has now started their journey of having a fixed or growth mindset. In “Brainology”, Carol explains the effects of having a fixed or growth mindset. The two types of mindsets are developed at very young ages, often in early elementary and at home by how parents praise their children. A fixed mindset is the result of negative praise and believing that the ability to succeed in a subject is based on what they already know about it.…

Before I began my Freshman Development Seminar course with Professor Furet, I believed that this class would not be of good use to me. The reason for this was because of my beliefs in self-teaching myself to learn the basics with additional help from other sources. However, it did not turn out the way I wanted it to be. Therefore, I had to pay to get taught what I could have done on my own, at least that is what I convinced myself then and there. Throughout my class sessions with Ms. Furet, I learned more than I could have ever imagined.…
