Sometimes the truth is the right thing to tell even when you believe an individual may not want to hear it. Bending the truth slightly, can lead some into thinking that “Things are always worse than what you hear” (227). Choosing not to tell the truth can distort people's feelings and beliefs. I chose the statement Teaching the Chicken to Cluck because they are a small symbols in the novel with multiple references and a large meaning behind them . The chicken is a cult animal of the Makumba cult of South america and the Voodoo of the Caribbean and of Africa. It guides souls in initiation rites and is a sacrificial animal. Seeing a chicken in a dream can indicate cowardliness. It can also represent gossip and be a warning to listen to what people may be saying to you or what you may be saying to others. They represent the Truth and the themes associated with the Chicken are thinking, being artistic, rest, expected delays, and contemplative actions. Teaching the Chicken to Cluck is to teach the Chicken to speak out and speak the truth.

In their simulated environment here, the chickens are forced into a section of land much like Tecumseh and his family being placed on a piece of reserved land. The contrast of the wide open, no limitation background to the small confined chicken coop relates to the description of the Church in the prologue. They both appear to not belong there and looks as if they had been “...hammered into the prairies”
