I highly value the five components of reading because they are all connected. Phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, reading comprehension and fluency are the five components that work together to create the reading experience. Students must develop skills in all the five areas to become successful skilled readers. Phonics is the connections between sounds and letter symbols. Students must know this in order to develop words. Phonemic awareness is the understanding that words are created from phonemes, which are the smallest units of sounds. Phonics is different phonemic awareness because phonics deal only with the letters and phonemic awareness deals with sounds. If I know my student’s assessments results, then I will know what to provide them with, for example, if they score low in vocabulary, then I will make an assumption that they lack understanding of vocabulary. I will have to go back to my teaching approach and focus more on activities and strategies that will benefit them in that specific area. If they score low on comprehending a text, then I will teach them to read using context clues to figure out word meanings.
