My Experience: The Value Of Differentiated Education

My teaching philosophy was primarily developed when I was in third grade while attending a non-traditional Montessori school. Students were solely responsible for their own learning setting goals and then working toward those goals independently. The adult facilitator helped the students to set goals, held them accountable and assisted with new content when requested by the student. It was in this environment that I learned how to set realistic goals that pushed me a little beyond my comfort zone and allowed me to reach my fullest potential. It was in this environment that I began to blossom as a student.

It is a true delight to see them grow throughout the year. In order to become an effective teacher, I believe that you must first become an effective student. Learning for me is a life-long process and is the foundation of my teaching philosophy. I believe that I must be knowledgeable and passionate about the content area in which I teach in order to bring out the best in my students. My future professional development will center on the idea of differentiated instruction. Differentiation creates equitable learning situations for all learners. Although I feel that I know a lot about this topic, by learning more about differentiated instruction it will become better integrated into the foundation of my classroom environment. According to Carol Ann Tomlinson, the road to a successfully differentiated classroom will succeed only if we ensure a foundation best-practice in both curriculum and …show more content…
They usually lack confidence due to their difficulties learning a new language, or fear of being in a new environment. They come to me with no voice, usually too shy or embarrassed to speak up. I feel that learning about a student’s culture is a vital first step to creating a classroom community of learners. Peregoy and Boyle (2008), assert that teachers must learn about their student’s culture in order to ensure the group’s unity and survival. By learning as much as I can about my students and incorporating my findings into my teaching, students are able to acclimate to the classroom where they quickly form into a cohesive unit. My classroom environment becomes their safe haven, in order to combat all of the barriers they bring with them to class. The goal is to create a student centered environment where the students take charge of their own learning. Most often I utilize the sheltered instruction model in my classroom. According to Diaz-Rico and Weed (2010), the goal of sheltered instruction is to provide support for the language learner while they are in the learning grade-appropriate content rather than allowing them to struggle in mainstream classes. Students are given the opportunity to read, write and listen prior to being given time to process their ideas before voicing them. Students are not judged for the content of their opinions but the quality of their thought process. My

In Chapter Four of Holler If You Hear Me by Gregory Michie, the author describes how some of the other veteran teachers in his education classes expressed their views on the disconnect between education theory and classroom reality. One such example of this disconnect is the theory of differentiated instruction. I have learned a lot about differentiated instruction in my Foundations Block classes this semester, since I had not previously heard of the concept. In theory, this practice is a great way to tailor instruction to each student’s individual needs, as well as encourage learning and exploration.…

Differentiation is an essential aspect of an effective classroom. In order to allow all students to learn effectively and to be the best learner they can be, the various differences in students must be taken in account. As Tomlinson states in On Excellence in Teaching “a goal of differentiation is to respond to student readiness, interest, and mode of learning often enough and in enough ways to support each students’ engagement with and understanding of essential goals” (Marzano et al, 2010, p257). Differentiating a lesson can range from adapting to differences in readiness level, student interest, or learning styles. This lesson’s differentiation will focus on the readiness level of a group of students.…

It is important to me that students understand that their culture is a part of them and what makes them who they are and often comes with a story about how they go to where they are. I try not to pass judgment me on others and their culture because this is something that we have no control over. We don 't pick what culture we are born into, which is probably a good thing. I feel there is no difference between the people I meet from myself. Beyond it all we are all still…

Although teaching is a field that is extremely rewarding, it also comes with its share of challenges. These challenges can be overcome, however, if the teacher believes in their students ability to learn, and is able to inspire and motivate them. The teacher can accomplish this task through motivating the students through lessons, tests, and a positive classroom environment. If the teacher is fully committed to their student’s best interests, the classroom will ultimately succeed, even if there are challenges along the way.…
