Importance Of Understanding My Self

Decent Essays
The journey of understanding my self has begun when I started studying oversea for a master degree. Fortunately, I have chosen the managing self and relationships unit in my second semester. The unit is just beyond my expectation. I would have never thought that the material we learn in class could be applied in our life. Students are instructed to choose some topics or instruments that would probably the most effective for their selves. In my view, I prefer to use VIA Strength Inventory which will enable us to identify our strengths. I refer my preference to Buckingham (2001), Harter, Schmidt et al. (2002) explain that a company could get an efficient performance by giving effort in managing employee’s strengths rather than weaknesses. While …show more content…
According to Baumeister and Mick (2002) that both self-regulation and self-control are the ability of someone to resist or react in a situation. One of my biggest temptation that I would like to work on is to reduce my sleep time from eight hours to seven hours a day and allocate it for studying. Even though, it seems to be quite a simple thing to do but in fact it is really difficult in practice. My best record in a week that I can resist to study rather than to sleep early at night or to wake up early in the morning is two to three days a week. My target for this challenge is to allocate one more hour for studying up to 5 days a week while the two other days which are the weekend, I would prefer to allocate them for relax times. So far, I have not specifically set up any activities or action plan regarding this habit. However, in a daily basis, usually I just try to push myself by activating the alarm to wake me up early in the morning. It can be seen from my experience by relying on the alarm clock, the successful percentage during a week is only …show more content…
He says that because willpower could deplete, so it is important to exercise it by completing an easy activity from time to time (Baumeister 2014). For example, I could relate it to the challenge of reducing my sleep time and allocate it for my study time. And about the New Year resolution, he suggests people to work on a particular activity sequentially rather than to work on several resolutions in a time. In this context, I believe that to focus on my single challenge in a period of time would allow me to have a bigger successful percentage rather than I set too many activities to succeed in a time. Then, the next thing for me to do is to set up a clear duration on how long I should work on this particular activity and what result that I may expect in the end of the activity. However, I should consider of some alternative methods of increasing my willpower when my first plan would not work. Additionally, I could use my first experience of working on my sleep time to design another activity regardless my first activity would be successful or fail. Therefore, I think it would be important to keep a journal that I could use for recording my daily experience during the activity. The daily journal would contain about what situation I face on that day and what is the

After carefully analyzing my results from the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, Strengths Finder and Holland Code, I now obtain a stronger understanding of myself as an individual and a learner. The Myers Briggs Type Indicator provided me with my four personalities which allowed me to thoroughly investigate each particular word and learn how I approach different scenarios. Before taking the type indicator exam, I knew how I operated as an individual and student but I was unaware of the specific words that stood behind my personalty. Now when people ask me, “tell me about yourself” or “how do you operate," I have strong and accurate vocabulary to use.…

In part one of “How to Become a Straight-A Student” by Cal Newport the main of this story is how to not to work and study for twelve hours straight, to show how to manage your time doing some simple things and help you avoid the urge of procrastination. The five ideas that resonated with me was making a “To Do List” and a “Things to Remember Column”, to feed my body with nutrients, tell others of your work and go to an area where there is no one you know, plan the hard days in advance, and to study at least an hour straight and to rest from time to time. Making a to do list resonated with me because it showed how easy your day can be with this idea. Just like in the story of Stephen, Newport said that “Stephen was able to really relax and have a good time at night. ”(Newport, )…

Upon completing the StrengthsFinder survey, it is determined my 5 greatest strengths are the learner, achiever, competition, strategic, and relator, all of which I expected (Clifton, Anderson, & Schreiner, 2006). While reading the text I examined the various themes of different strengths, relating closely to the 5 assigned by the survey, I am impressed by how well the explanations were written in the book, Strengths Quest Second Edition. The text in correlation with the materials provided from the StrengthsFinder survey brought forth meaning and depth into finding out exactly the type of person I am. Learning is listed as my top strength in the survey (Clifton, Anderson, & Schreiner, 2006). I believe I have used that trait extensively throughout…

They are also dishonest- with themselves because they expect people and things to make them happy. Even though certain people and experiences can bring us temporary joy, true happiness is all in the mind.…

In the book The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, he claims people can understand and change personal habits. Duhigg provides a description of the so-called habit loop composed of a cue, routine, and reward, pointing out the cues start habits and rewards signal the brain to remember routines. In fact, the author's purpose is to inform the reader about habit loops so they can see how habits work and thus remake them. With Duhigg’s insight about habits, students can stop the bad habit of procrastination, which is the habit of delaying assignments until the last minute. In particular, students should “recognize which craving is the driving behavior” of procrastination to (50).…

Looking back on my semester, and my Global Mindset Inventory Assessment I can say based off of the parameters I set for myself, I could have been a lot better about ensuring that I achieve my goals and objectives. However, I think that by acknowledging the areas where I was the weakest/lacked the certain skillset needed, allowed for me to still have some personal growth in these areas. In my Assessment Plan, I had chosen to work on my Cosmopolitan Outlook (2.71), Interpersonal Empathy (2.83) and Global Business Savvy skills (1.38). I had originally chosen theses skills, because they were ones that I scored the lowest in, but also because I found them to be the ones that provided the best opportunity for personal growth in myself across my scoresheet.…

Self reflection is the mental process that acquires knowledge and understanding through thoughts and experience which helps encourage self awareness. This essay focuses on assessing my objectives and how I have developed my skills from the beginning of this semester until now. At the start of semester A, I wasn’t confident in preparing for the skills sessions and workshops. I wasn 't always able to find the correct answers to the workshop questions set which made it relatively difficult for me to participate in lectures despite finding myself at the library every other day. I began by listening to knowledge based lectures online and making notes alongside the recommended reading given by my lecturers or the module guide.…
