Reflective Summary

Every student learns differently, the teacher must provide different opportunities for all students to learn and grow. “The challenge is to get all of your students to learn mathematics with understanding and enthusiasm” (van de Walle, Karp, & Bay-Williams, 2016, p. 2).I think that teacher plays and important role in children loving or hating math. The way math is introduced and applied must be engaging with real life connections in order to be meaningful. One of the challenges I faced during both interactions was that the Plan of Actions were a guide but I had do make some modifications to meet the students’ learning level and style. The kindergarten student liked to use manipulatives but the 3rd grade student did not.

What I found with this class, MIP, and observations in general, is not that I don’t like math, it is that the way I learned it. Learning mathematics was a one way structured concept. After learning about manipulatives, different techniques, and strategies, mathematics are more appealing to me. In order to be an effective mathematics teacher I will provide different opportunities for growth, and experiences to build knowledge. I will use manipulatives and strategies to adapt learning and provide an engaging classroom. One of the activities I will use is Number Talk, this is a way students can demonstrate and apply their concept knowledge. This activity not only benefits one student but creates a learning community between the teacher and the students since they are sharing processes and strategies with each other. “One of the best ways for students to grow their repertoire is to listen to strategies invented by classmates as they are shared, explored, and tried out by others” (van de Walle, Karp, & Bay-Williams, 2016, p. 255). I will incorporate technology but will not rely on it to teach math. I will use technology as a practice resource to provide additional interactive practice. One of the areas I need to work on is concept knowledge, during the 3rd grade, 2nd interview it required area model, and I did not feel really comfortable with area model since I had just barely learned in class. I think a little more practice on the area model would help me to feel more confident and knowledgeable about the concept. I need more personal experience teaching math, I think that every lesson will be a learning opportunity for me to grow and be an effective teacher. One of the areas I need more practice and experience is providing students with questions to guide towards a process or answer, and understand their thinking and common misconceptions to accommodate teaching and enhance
