If students from an early age learn to effectively read/ write and know how to learn from reading and writing, then they will excel so much more in their content classes later on in education, according to Dr. William Heller (2012). I never intended to be an illegal smuggler. Seriously. But when four-year-old me found out that preschool had "naptimes" (in which apparently nobody napped, making it a waste of time to me), I decided to take matters into my own hands, with drastic measures. The next day, my top-secret contraband came in with me, in the form of a book. At 1:30, while everyone else did whatever preschoolers do during naptime, the book snuck out of its carefully concealed hiding place and I disappeared into its pages.…

Reflecting on this course has brought that deeper understanding of the intermediate literacy learner and their ability to decipher information through text and composing in written form. As I continue with my professional development, this course has given me the foundation needed to reach intermediate grade literacy learners by exposing them to a balanced literacy program allowing for their growth in reasoning, organizational, and application skills. Learning about literacy in grades four through six and expecting student growth was no surprise however, the growth that transpired from this educator was. Until this course…

During my nineteen years on this earth and my fourteen to fifteen years in school, I have been exposed to many different forms of literacy. Areas I have been or am literate in are reading, writing, music, social media, and workplace. Besides reading and writing, workplace literacy is the biggest area I am literate in. This is my biggest area because I have worked the same job since the summer before my junior year of high school in 2013. This job is in a veterinarian’s office and I would, with full confidence, say that this isn’t the normal job of a high schooler.…
