Throughout this semester I have developed new beliefs and grew a vast amount in my professional development. I have learned so many new strategies, routines, and techniques through our readings, our classroom discussions, and by observing how my collaborative teacher runs her classroom. This semester I have spent weeks in a kindergarten classroom, and have loved every second of it. However, I have learned how much kindergartners rely on and need structure and routine in the classroom. Being able to spend so much time in my classroom every week has helped me discover and strengthen certain beliefs I have in regards to the students and the purpose of education. In both of these placements, I was able to see teachers that implemented classroom helps/jobs. In my class this semester we have nine different jobs, teachers helps, supply cleaner, flag holder, line leader, calendar helper, door holder, lights helper, trashcan helper, and the attendance helper. When I first saw this I didn’t see the full importance of these besides it might just be something my teacher has done for years. However, after observing and reading more into classroom jobs the more I realized how important it is in a classroom and how special it is for the students. The students take these jobs very seriously, and it gives them a responsibility that helps the class run smoothly each day. This is something I will definitely like to incorporate into my future classroom. If I were to teach an older grade, I would just change the jobs to ones that fit our specific classroom needs. I also love how my teacher incorporates a talking circle into our mornings every single day. Everyday my collaborative teacher, the paraprofessional, our twenty-one students, and myself sit in the front of the room around the rug and each person shares a short bit of information with the class. This is a great opportunity for the students to learn about each other, allows us to get to know our students, and lets the students learn more about their teachers. One of these first things we discussed in class that I was intrigued by was brain-based activity. The small things that should be in a classroom such as a plant, different lighting, or the scent of peppermint are all things I found important and easy to incorporate into a classroom. I also have learned so much new information about how to address disruptions in the classroom. Not every behavior or disruption needs to be verbally called out; some non-verbal responses are all a student needs. These non-verbal strategies such as proximity, a touch, ignoring, and specific signals are ones I will keep in mind during my first year and many years of teaching. Some more strategies that I learned from ECE 4475 that I have stored away in my files are the brain-based activity of SCOOT and using the online resource of GoNoodle. My kindergarten class uses GoNoodle everyday and the physical movement is a great way to give the students a brain break. SCOOT is also another strategy I’d like to use in my first year of teaching, incorporating the music, movement, and learning content into one activity is a great to get the student engaged in their learning.
