Teaching Fruit Flies

After watching the video I found it very interesting that flies are capable of learning. I never even thought that we could do such a thing. There is a lot of information in how humans can teach and train animals. But never have I heard of teaching flies. This goes to show the power and knowledge humans have. In the video, David conducted research on teaching fruit flies to avoid odors by pairing an odor with a shock. This reminds me of the use of classical conditioning of John B. Watson, Ivan Pavlov, and many other behavioral psychologists who used this learning process to elicit responses. I agree with David in that psychiatric drugs are not one hundred percent effective. As he and other researchers are conducting research, I believe that further knowledge will be gained. While gaining more knowledge they will soon be able to find targeted forms of treatment for psychiatric disorders. I do not think the cause of psychiatric disorders are solely due to chemical imbalances. Although a chemical imbalance may play a major factor, other factors may play a cause for the psychiatric disorder. Like the environment and …show more content…
In doing this, they are able to learn about the different behaviors that may or may not occur. They are also able to study the neurons and how it affects behavior. From previous courses, I have learned that there is a large number of people who do not benefit from their prescribed medications. For example, those whose diagnosed with depression are usually prescribed with antidepressants. The antidepressants may not work effectively or they may have several negative side effects. David mentioned when it comes to mental health, there is not much scientific approach to addressing disorders, as opposed to cancer and diseases. There is so much that we can learn from the mental health field, but we just have to take the time to study

The flies are small and easy to maintain in a lab, cost-efficient, and have a quick life cycle, all qualities that make this a prime organism to utilize for genetic research. The data and conclusions derived from this research can have long term effects on not just the understanding of genetics but on the treatment of human diseases. A disease of great personal and recent national interest, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis…

Fruit flies are used in genetics and biological research because they are cheap and be quickly cultured. The use of the Pearson’s fly lab was pre-assigned for the physical experimental procedures to produce results in a limited time frame and reduce the chance of fruit flies contaminating the lab from student error. In order to test the hypothesis, I would observe the F2 generation. The initial parent cross takes approximately two weeks prior to produce the F1 generation. This parental cross would be of a homozygous recessive female (bb) with either a homozygous dominant male (BB) or dominant male with only one allele (XB Y).…

The fruit flies does deal with dominant vs. recessive for the wing traits. Complete dominance occurs when the dominant allele complete cover (hide) the recessive allele. This occurs to the wing traits in the fruit flies. Normal wings are dominant over vestigial wing and base on the data, the female that carries the vestigial wing did not create any F1 generation of vestigial traits. This occurs because the male has normal wing so when the two parent meet; the dominant normal wing in the male completely cover up the recessive vestigial wing in the female traits.…

For this lab we conducted a population genetics study on the frequency of wild and apterous flies within a small population of fruit flies. The fruit fly Drosophila works well for genetic and evolutionary geared studies because they have a relatively short generation time but are intricate enough to reveal some biological principles that are parallel to many different kinds of eukaryotic organisms. When exposed to artificial selection in laboratory experiments, fruit flies have experienced dramatic changes behavioral and evolutionary traits within ten generations or less (Goldsmith, 1991). It is important to note that wild flies have wings and apterous flies do not. The purpose of artificial selection is for humans to modify species over generations by intentionally breeding two organisms with the objective of acquiring a specific trait.…

A human’s cognitive ability is unlike any other animal on the earth. Compared to other animals, the human brain possesses more neurons and synapses, tallying eighty-six billion and one hundred fifty trillion respectively. The wiring of the brain and its connections are responsible for human’s superior cognition. Thus, the reason neuroscientists pursue research of neural connections is obvious; neural connections are the fundamental basis of individual expression. Many famous neuroscientists, each with their own twist, are currently working to map the trillions of connections within the brain.…

A study conducted in Israel by researchers at Bar-Ilan University shows promising results in the battle of alcohol addiction. Scientist test fruit flies to discover how to pleasure flies without alcohol consumption. The head of the research team, Galit Shohat-Ophir tested flies under the red-light district to see if they were affected by the red-light. This activated a protein, called corazonim (CRZ) located in their abdomen that caused them to ejaculation. As a result, to their exposure the fruit flies ejaculated and did not desire other pleasures, such as liquor spiked with alcohol.…

Behavioral medication is a field of science that applies biomedical science knowledge to prevent, diagnose, and treat disorders that affect the development, behavior, and psychological mindsets of diagnosed individuals in order to improve mental health and reduce major symptoms. This includes anxiety, depression, asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and substance abuse (Behavioral Medicine). However, treatments are expensive and prescribed medications do not work for everyone. In fact, a study in 2005 revealed that the annual cost of illness for patients diagnosed with Attention-deficit hypertension disorder (ADHD) was between 32 billion and 52 billion dollars (New Data: Medication and Behavior Treatment). Also, some medications, such as antidepressants,…

Throughout the rest of the project I observed how an expected outcome can vary greatly from an observed outcome,…

Therefore, normal people stereotype those with mental illnesses about what they could be capable of, when in fact most people just want help. I really enjoyed reading this article as it pertains to the field i want to go into.
