Typically girls outperform boys on standardized test, the amount of reading done relates directly to reading achievement, and the kind of reading in school can cause boys to read less are three issues that need to be addressed. Knowing this, a study was conducted in an elementary school with thirty-five boys from four fifth grade classes in a north central North Carolina to find out what boys really want. The activity is that help children from 6 months to 9 years of age gain essential early literacy skills. When introducing a child to comprehensive literacy a major aspect that is involved in the reading and writing instructions in helping them progress on literacy development skills. Some approaches that are used to these type of instructions are read and write alongs, shared and guided reading and writing. For children that are in Pre-K to first grade it is important to have instructions that are simple and understandable when being read aloud so there will be very little confusion in the introduction to the activity that would be given at hand. Oral language delivers the basis for learning to read and is related to general reading achievement throughout primary and secondary schooling. Oral interactions help to shape a child’s vocabulary knowledge. Research shows that the number and the variety of words that children are exposed to are linked to literacy achievement later in life. When children are surrounded by, and included in, rich and increasingly multifaceted conversations, their vocabulary increases, the complexity of the language structures they use broaden and they become language risk takers and develop confidence in the way they communicate. In Language Learning for School Aged Children, I developed a further understanding of literacy, as it pertains to language development and the field of Speech Pathology. Throughout the semester, I used several of the literacy-specific techniques and ideologies presented in this class; specifically, I used shared book reading to enhance reading comprehension at the Preschool for Creative Learning.
