Teaching in the 21st Century is nothing like anyone before could have anticipated. The modern-day teacher cannot afford to think outside of the box; he or she must build a new one. The skills necessary for the 21st Century leader are clear; the leader must be aware of his or her followers’ needs, while raising the motivation and morality of both parties. In order for this to occur, a transformational approach is suggested (Northouse 2013). The contemporary leader must encourage others to leave the outdated ideas of a classroom and student engagement and performance, and usher them into the new age of schooling.
The leader should empower both students and teachers to think critically and creatively, and remind them of the difference

Teachers must focus more on critical thinking skills and less on content. As opposed to identifying author’s purpose in an essay, the student will create an essay, wiki, or blog that demonstrates his or her ability to establish and understand a purpose and argument. At the end of each year or critical task, the student portfolio will demonstrate not only the best product, but a progression, and evidence of the student’s learning over the course of a specific period of time.
Curriculum 21 suggests students should participate in projects that promote global sustainability, and incorporates science and mathematics in a meaningful way. Students can no longer afford the rote memorization of topics, culture, and ideas from other countries, but create projects with students from other countries that have a global impact. It is more than skyping with a peer around the world, but collaborating with a partner around the world to make it a better place to live.
Embedding media literacy into all subject areas is another necessity in the 21st century. By the time a child is ten, over half will have a social media account or app (dailymail.com 2014). As

Learning is no longer linear, but messy and complicated, and students need a guide through these new creations. Because information and learning is more global today than any other time period, teachers certifications should be progressing towards a global model, only then can American students compete with their international counterparts. The expectation of teachers is no longer just keeping up with local and national news, but becoming aware of the global interactions among countries, and understandings its impact.
The new role of the teacher is to prepare the students for a world that is changing, and to guide students on how to be more effective and sustaining citizens in an increasingly globalized world; there is an international assessment that proves the United States is not adequately preparing students for that world. The Programme of International Student Assessment (PISA) is an organization that assesses 15 year-old students in the areas of reading, mathematics, and science. In 2012, sixty-five countries and their economies participated in the survey. The United States is currently ranked 17th in the area
