After a varied and valuable seven years in practice and following on from a year of tutoring on the specialist paediatric practice in osteopathy course I now feel I have some additional teaching and educator skills which could be valuable to MSc Pre Reg students. I believe my previous lecturing and teaching experience along with my refreshed and new skills acquired over the last year at the BSO demonstrate that I could meet the learning needs of the diverse students who will attending this course. During that last year I have been involved in preparing and delivering tutorials, aiding students in their ongoing learning, student assessments and adapting to the ever changing needs of the teaching support need in clinic.

Before commencing my osteopathic training I lectured for over 12 years at leading London art school, which has given me a wide and varied experience of teaching in both academic and community settings, I devised, delivered and assessed students in a busy department of 450 students working with a team of colleagues who were also professional artists and designers in their own right.

When I was younger I never knew the wealth of possibilities that came alongside a D.O. degree, and my interest in Osteopathic Medicine was firmly solidified with my interaction with countless Osteopathic physicians while working at Baptist Hospital of Miami as a ED physician scribe. Having worked with both DO and MD physicians I can say, with certainty, that the way in which DO physicians, in particular, Dr. Alexa Viloria, a Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine alumni, handled patients, considering the interconnectedness of the human body, is what makes them such effective healers. It is by taking into account various bodily functions, and how they are connected and dependent on each other that DO physicians are able to…

Growing up as daughter of two immigrant refugees, I learned to conserve my resources because we were not always financially stable and had to minimize household spending with methods such as attempting home remedies before going to a doctor. Like my parents, my grandmother followed the same tradition as she believed western physicians made patients sicker and therefore did not trust them. When she was suddenly admitted to the hospital for fluid leakage of the liver, the damage to her internal organs were too severe to be treated. Although at first I assumed my grandmother was being cynical about American culture of healthcare, I later learned that my hometown consisted of a large Vietnamese population that were not receiving adequate healthcare services, including individuals like my grandmother. My grandmother’s experiences have compelled me to pursue medicine to offer medical services available to underserved populations.…
