Being able to recognize and identify what strategies these students need to be successful in school and identifying their negative behaviors, if any, is key to their learning success. Being able to identify their learning development impacts the appropriate and effective interventions and strategies for working with each student. I have learned that it is very important identify areas that impede the students’ learning in some way which includes behavior. Using different perspectives can engage learners in their creativity and critical thinking: which leads to a deeper understanding of content knowledge. During one of my lessons on teaching social skills, the students led a discussion on their views of the upcoming elections. They learned how to connect concepts to real world issues while maintaining proper discussion “etiquette” as they discussed, as a group, the upcoming elections. If the connections are meaningful this can potentially assure mastery of content.
In the standard of content knowledge, I feel that I am proficient. The different scholarly articles and books had provided me with a wealth of information that I will take with me as I continue my pursuit of becoming a teacher. In order to maintain a proficient level of understanding, I plan on taking more classes at Granite State College that pertain to special education. I also plan on taking more professional development classes through my work as a paraprofessional.
