The action of being mean is learned; being kind takes less energy than being mean and that is showcased in the book Of Mice and Men, written by the one and only John Steinbeck, who didn’t have a very easy life himself either. The story shows the struggle of moving from farm to farm and the cruel life in the 1930’s The characters of Lennie, Slim, and George showcase that sometimes the nice guy doesn’t mean that you are always the most liked or respected, but at least you can sleep in peace at night. In How Children Succeed, Paul Tough’s overall purpose was to explain why some children thrive and why some do not in being successful. He uses examples of real life encounters and other credible sources to support his claim. For example, he talks to underprivileged children, coaches of sports and inspirational speakers. Tough points out that over the past few decade people have put too much emphasis on intelligence and IQ as the one thing children need to succeed. He then argues that what that has done for children and families is that it takes away from a whole other set of skills to be learned: noncognitive skills such as character strength.…
