Teachers that are transformative intellectuals strive to know both their school and their students. Transformative intellectuals strive to try out new ideas, and to push the boundaries of what they already know to develop new ideas of learning. Teachers that are transformative intellectuals think critically and try to apply those new ideas in their classroom. Henry Giroux states in the article, “Teachers as Transformative Intellectuals” that current teachers are not being taught to critically reflect on what they are or should be doing as a teacher. Some teachers who are in teaching programs are only being taught the technical skills of their position as a teacher in the classroom. They should be learning how to critically think about the many faceted position career they will have as a teacher and what they can do to make the education system work better for teachers and students alike. …show more content…
At this point in time, many educational reforms treat teachers as technicians that strive to have their students master required content. Standardization is becoming the norm in education, and therefore more control is given to the people who design the test rather than giving the teacher the power to control what they feel is the right thing to teach. With standardized testing, test makers want to see that students are achieving necessary goals by excelling on the test, but not everything in life can be learned by being test savy. When teachers think critically about what they want to teach their students, they realize that schools need to be a place of positive thought where students enjoy learning things that will be useful to them in the
