What does the idea of teacher leadership mean to you?
In the past, teacher leadership was often only for those who wished to advance their careers, and eventually move away from actually being a teacher in the classroom. Today, teacher leadership is for those that wish to analyze current teaching ideas and best practices, assess these methods in their classroom, develop a specialized skill, and then share what they have learned with their colleagues. Teacher leadership is also an important part of shared leadership. Shared leadership encompasses the foundation of joint leadership roles, which allows for all involved with the school, including community members, to have an opportunity to share their viewpoints, insights, feedback, opinions,

This school year we had a new member, Matt, join our 4th grade team. The other two members and I have taught together for 10 years. Matt taught 2nd grade for years at another school in our district. While he is not a new teacher, he was definitely in a position where he felt completely foreign with his surroundings, and out of his comfort zone. Not being asked by anyone, I took it upon myself to serve as his mentor, and guide him through the waters of becoming a 4th grade teacher. Matt and I have spent countless hours working together. One of the first things I did was work to familiarize him with his new school, and make him feel welcome and comfortable. Next, I began helping him to develop robust lesson plans, and guided him regarding instruction, procedure, curriculum, and best practices. Being a mentor takes a great deal of time and expertise and makes a significant contribution to the development of a great teacher. Knowing this, makes all the time and effort put forth worthwhile. It is also amazing what this has done for me. It has forced me to be even better teacher than I was before, causing me to constantly review what I am doing, improving on what has been done in the past, and making sure I accomplish my goal of always doing the best that I can for my

Improving on what I have done in the past and learning new things is like breathing to me, it is just something that I must do. The day that I stop trying to make everything that happens in my classroom better is the day I need to stop teaching. There are many changes I have incorporated in my classroom over the last few years to enhance student learning. I will discuss a couple that have proved to be the most impactful.
One modification was to utilize more heterogeneous grouping activities. Often we only use ability groups in our collaborative work. Using heterogeneous grouping allows for my students to learn from one another. This forces those who understand the material to explain it to those that don’t quite have it yet. Those that have an understanding and can teach to someone else show true mastery. Those having some difficulties profit from hearing someone other than the teacher. Then all students can benefit and show their full

This gave me an awesome opportunity to stretch outside my comfort zone of lesson planning and see really how much work it is going to take to be the kind of teacher I want to be. Despite all the rules and regulations imposed on teachers today, I found that it is possible to teach to cultivate skills that students will use for the rest of their lives while also teaching to the standards. I recognize that it’s a bit idealistic and will definitely come with long nights, a lot of frustration and maybe a few tears, but in the end, I think it’s a small…

Teaching at Russell Middle School was much different than teaching at Mountain Vista Elementary. Both experiences were fulfilling but each were completely different. In our lesson we taught the 7th grade advance math class about scale factoring. Our cooperating teacher had just introduced the topic to the class the day before we taught our lesson, so it was nice coming into the class and being able to teach the students something new. This lesson also had us teaching as a group and not in separate small groups.…

I am grateful to be able to say that I have never worked for a principal who I have viewed as a boss. The two I have worked under were inspiring leaders who worked diligently to lead the teachers on the missions they declared for the school. I imagine working for a boss would be frustrating and get very tiresome after awhile. Most adults do not like to be told what to do and it truly limits their growth as an educator.…

When we enter into the classroom every day and prepare our lesson plans, we are doing more than just repeating material from a book. We are sharing our personal knowledge with those who will one day control the world. We put a little piece of ourselves in every student we encounter. Whether or not we actually influence them is up to the student. Therefore we must make every possible effort to make a huge impact on their lives each and every…

Educators everywhere have diverse views of the education system as a whole. The teacher I interviewed gave me insight on her views as an educator in today’s time. Mrs. Ezell, a current preschool teacher at the Woodland pre-k, discussed the importance of creativity in the classroom. She also discussed different learning styles and the need for differentiation. Her primary purpose as a teacher is to benefit each child in the classroom.…

ESL students need examples and clear directions. It can be difficult to determine how much help is too much. I want to ensure that students are learning, but I want to make sure that they also understand what is expected of them. As teachers work with ESL they may notice that some students need more help than others. Teachers should be mindful of how much help they give ESL students because sometimes they may be doing the work for them.…
