The first interview was of Jeremy. The first question asked was how did you decide that you wanted to be a teacher. Jeremy is a very honest and funny man and as per normal he did not disappoint. Moreover, the other major reason he decided to be a teacher was that he had two associate degrees and he did not know what to do with his college career and felt he had to choose something soon, or risk never getting his bachelor’s degree.
Next Jeremy was asked, what was the worst discipline strategy and best discipline strategy he has ever deployed. Jeremy said that as a young teacher he made a terrible discipline strategy and he actually got in trouble for it. What happened was one day one of his second graders was being particularly difficult and he told the young man to go in the corner and hold a chair over his head until he got tired.
The best strategy that Jeremy has used in class and currently uses is the token strategy. In fact, he hands out tickets and if the student gets ten tickets by the end of the week the student receives a toy. Velva first wanted to be a teacher when she was a junior in high school. She had a very great teacher who helped her a lot when she was going through a difficult personal moment in her life. This teacher was good and kind to her, so she was inspired to become a teacher herself.
Once again, Velva gave very different answers for her discipline strategies. She said her best discipline strategy that she has ever used is being very clear about the rules of her class and holding everyone equally accountable to them, including herself. She noted that teaching high school is much different than elementary school and if you are not careful the students will take control of the class. Therefore, she has found that being tough, but fair elicits the best response with regards to high school students.
She said the worst strategy was when she did not take into account her students ' feelings. She went on to explain that she had a student once who was the “de facto class leader”. He was a trouble maker and rebellious student, but for some reason all the other students looked up to him.
