Teacher Collaboration

Teacher collaboration can fortify schools; enhance student achievement, and teacher learning. The benefits that collaboration can provide include professional development, increasing student success, and improving instruction. Novice teachers can certainly benefit from mentoring programs emphasizing collegial support. The opportunity to participate in the collaborative experience is one method to reduce the turnaround rate for new teachers. Furthermore, it helps them achieve greater personal satisfaction by believing in their own worth, participating in decision making and forming strong collegial relationships (Lassonde & Israel, 2009). As a teacher candidate, concerns of being a new teacher in an established school include a feeling of isolation, performance pressure and a sense of struggling among experienced peers. By working together teachers are able to share their resources and responsibility as well as obtain the support they need or want regarding instruction, curriculum and professional development (Phegley & Oxford, 2010). For instance, as a novice teacher it would be beneficial to have an administrator or veteran teacher sit in during class instruction to observe or perhaps to review lesson plan designs in order to offer feedback.
