Mrs. Ballardo is a Kindergarten teacher, she works for the Long Beach Unified School District at Bobbie Smith Elementary and she has been teaching for over 25 years!
1. Why did you decide to become a teacher? Mrs. Ballardo said that she decided to become a teacher her senior year in college. She said that she never wanted to become a teacher, mainly because of the pay. She said that everyone was telling her that teacher’s work too hard and too much to get paid as low as they do and that it is not worth it. Her original major was in Psychology. She finally decided to become a teacher after having a talk with the head of department for Liberal Studies. She said that the lady guided her to become a teacher and told her that she knew that teaching

When and how do you plan your lesson? (daily, weekly, monthly) Mrs. Ballardo said that she do long term planning with her other colleagues. She does a daily planner every day. She said that she could be sleeping and she’ll wake up around two in the morning and start thinking of her lessons plans for the next day. She said that every day she already has everything together in her head for the day, even though she might not have it written down.
3. If students are not at grade level, what do you do to help them? If students are not at grade level, she says that she tries to work with them herself one on one, or small groups based on their needs. She said that she also has her volunteers, college aids, and work with her students who are not grade level. She said that she also gets to the parents and let them know how they could help their children at home. Lastly, she said that she will have more than just one conference a year with the parents.
4. What is one of the greatest challenges of teaching? The greatest challenge for Mrs. Ballardo is that her goal is to get her students where they need to be. She said although that does not seem to happen all the time because they progress but they still are not at grade level.

If students are not at grade level. What do you do to help them? She said that if her students in her class is not up to grade level she does small groups with them, talk with the parents, tutor them after school and try to get their parents more involved.
5. In your opinion, what is the major misconception about teaching? She said that the major misconception about teaching to her is hearing everyone tell her that teachers are so lucky because they get the summer off and do not have to do any work. Which is not true at all because she said that she spends her summers preparing for the next school year. Another misconception about teaching to her is that not everyone is cut out to teach.
6. What would be your advice for future teachers? Her advice for future teachers are to teach with passion. Be passionate about what you teach the students in your class. If a teacher shows that they are passionate and care, the children will see that and they are going to want to learn. She said lastly no matter what a teacher must be
