Janie had been married twice before Tea Cake, both which has been failures. Both of her previous husbands have been commanders and dominators who did not respect Janie’s opinions nor did they care for her. Janie had been a source of utility for Logan, while Joe kept Janie like a treasure meant to be looked at and nothing more. These did not match up with her dreams of love and being loved.
