I found it very interesting to learn that children are motivated to learn things just beyond their understanding. In other words, they have an eagerness to learn as long as the material isn’t too difficult or too easy for them to grasp. Knowing this makes it easier to understand the needs children have in regards to their development. Initially, the child is introduced to the task with the assistance of a peer or adult and gently supported into succeeding at this level. Once they have developed confidence in the task they are then encouraged to explore their new skills on their own through a variety of methods. The term scaffolding applies to this approach and is designed to encourage confidence within the child and to allow them time to develop at their own pace. Adversely, it is imperative the teacher doesn’t progress the child to quickly without allowing them to conquer the new skill several times because this might overwhelm or frustrate the child into giving up. …show more content…
I have found myself teaching them more directly then I did when they were still in preschool, mainly reading, spelling and mathematics. This particular excerpt will be very helpful in the upcoming months of school as I have a better understanding on how to support them in figuring out the words they are reading or the math problems they encounter instead of just giving them the answers more directly. I will implement more open ended questions to try and assist them in figuring out the answers on their own. Finally, I will allow them to practice areas they have already mastered, for example, phonograms they already know, in an effort to ensure they have mastered the subject thoroughly before moving on to more difficult
