When starting Daily 5 for the first time with a class, it is important to start small and build up from there. Repetition is also very important when beginning Daily 5. It is important to have short practice sessions and then come back together and talk about how it went. This will help the students to nail down a few places that are best for them when it comes to reading independently. On the first day of school the author encourages the teacher to let the students look around and chose a few book they think are good fit books for them. This gets students acquainted with the classroom library and helps them to see what their choices will be. The first foundational lesson is read to self. There are three lessons to be taught under this category. The lessons include; three ways to pick a book, IPICK good fit books, and choose a successful spot. These foundational lessons should be used during the first few weeks of school when the independent reading time is shorter because the student’s stamina is lower. According to the author, many teachers try and hurry the process which leads to picking out books that aren’t a good fit, which usually leads to less then good behavior during independent reading time. Explain to the students they have this amount of time and give them a chance to practice the IPICK strategy. After teaching read to self, it is now time to move on to the other foundational lessons of Daily 5. According to the author, you may be able to get all the lessons in with older children, however, if you are working with younger children you might just pick a few lesson under each foundation to teach on the first day. No matter what age you are working with though, the author strongly encourages brain breaks in between each of these
