I interviewed LaShawna Hanes, a research assistant from Lyon College. She keeps a personal journal on her samples of multidrug resistant tuberculosis because the research itself, will take years. Bovine tuberculosis is an infectious disease mainly in livestock caused by Mycobacterium bovis and has had substantial economic impacts in the UK and worldwide. The primary organ targeted by M.bovis is the host lung and the bacterial infection is accompanied by a localized inflammation, resulting in the migration of different immune cells and leakage of serum proteins on the site of infection. Some of the first host molecules to be involved are collectins, which are soluble innate immune molecules that play an important role in targeting microbes. The definitive diagnosis is through an acid fast stain of the bacteria in a lab, obtained through multiple sputum cultures and a chest x-ray showing abnormalities of the lungs. There is antibiotic treatment for tuberculosis but the bacteria is very drug resistant due to the stiff structure of the cell wall and as a result, the antibiotic course is long and sometimes dangerous due to serious side effects. The most common antibiotics used to treat TB are isoniazid and rifampicin for a minimum of six months. There are drug-resistant strains of TB known as MDR-TB and in these cases, several drugs are used at once to give treatment a better chance at success.
