Taylor had to strike development deal with a recording company. When she was fourteen she signed a deal with RCA Records this deal was short lived due to the face that they want Taylor to be 18 before releasing her first album. In 2004 Swift became the youngest songwriter ever hired by the Sony/ATV Tree publishing house. This didn’t last either. Jon Caramanica of The New York Times described it as "a small masterpiece of pop-minded country, both wide-eyed and cynical, held together by Ms. Swift's firm, pleading voice." Big Machine Records was still in its infancy and Taylor and her mother helped stuff the cd’s in to envelopes to send to radio stations. She then went on a six month long radio tour. Through her determination she quickly gained a fan base. The album sold thirty nine thousand copies with in the first week and as of march 2011 it has sold five and a half million worldwide.
