Yesterday I lost my job… And today, tax day, my family woke up to a loud knock on the door. As me being the man of the house I got up and answered the door to find congressman, John Carter.
”Hello, Mr. Patterson… It has come to my understanding that yesterday you lost your job, and are not able to pay your taxes…” Mr. Carter explained,”But unfortunately we have to kick you out.” He turned and pointed to a tractor coming down the road.

We had been through the storm before-it was AWFUL- but during that time we had shelter. “Throw everything in the wagon we need to go NOW!” I bellowed. Everybody started to throw our things in the wagon and jump in. It was getting closer and I had to act fast… so first we went to the blacksmith's shop. “DAD GET IN IT ’S AN EMERGENCY!” I screamed as loud as I could. He raced out of the shop and jumped in and directed me toward the house. As soon as we got there we ran inside and started to get wet towels to put by the windows and doors. As soon as they were all covered me, my dad and Josephine got a huge blanket and soaked it. Then we huddled under the the blanket as we had washcloths over our mouths. The storm lasted for like an hour and a half and it was bad. After about an hour, we took the blanket off and as soon as we did Angeline collapsed.
“ANGELINE!ANGELINE!” Josephine yelled trying to shake Angeline into

The dust bowl made the land dry and unfarmable, forcing the Joad’s as well as many others to move east for work. Forces that are beyond people's control can forever change their lives, especially when they are held accountable for the results. I remember vividly an intimidatingly burly fire marshall telling I don’t remember much about it, except that they told each of us that we needed an escape plan in case of a fire. I remember a story my mom had told me many times about a fire that devastated her family when she was a little girl. It made me shake in my shoes.…
