Tattoos in Mainstream Culture
Over the past few decades, the number of tattooed people have skyrocketed. According to a 2016 Harris Poll, three in ten American adults have a tattoo. Tattoos have become a part of mainstream culture due to various reasons. Some people get tattoos on a whim, while others get them to remember a loved one. Tattoos are a popular form of body modification, but there are people who dislike tattoos. Regardless of how people view tattoos, we can confidently say that they have opened up a whole new world of self expression to many. Today, tattoos have become part of the norm. Although change is everywhere, tattoos show that some things do not change, such as loved ones, and memories. Many people turn to tattoos because they look for security and permanence in a world that keeps changing. To provide these desires, people might choose to get a tattoo. Body art is a favored option because it allows a person to express his/her unchanging passions and values. A vast majority of those who get tattoos have them to record something that is precious to them. Some people choose to get tattoos to “reinvent” themselves, like Drew Beckett did. After suffering severe hair loss, he decided to get tattoos to distract people from his lack of hair. Graham Platts, who is also covered in tattoos, claims that he became addicted to tattoos after he stopped smoking. He says that he replaced an unhealthy addiction with a much safer one. Others like Izzy Nash and Victoria Clarke believe tattoos are a bodysuit that showcase who they are through artwork. Clarke also mentioned that the love she gets for her tattoos is what matters.
