Tattoos have been around for thousands of years. The oldest known exists on Otzi, the Iceman. Ancient Egyptians, Aztecs, and Mayans believed tattoos could change everyday life. They believed that tattoos could improve various abilities, increase fertility, and bring them closer to their deities. For thousands of years, there have been just as many reasons one may choose to be tattooed. This essay serves to elaborate on a select few; memories, sex appeal, and addiction. Many tattoos are inked memories of a person or event. A person may get tattooed in memoriam of a lost loved one. For example, a young man’s grandfather passed away. Their bond was monumental. The young man decided to get a patriotic tattoo to remind him of his grandfather. The tattoo features the service patch, along with birth and death dates, and an insignia indicating service during WWII. In fact, a deeply personal tattoo that reads Ary is an inked reminder of a daughter taken before her time. Commonly seen are young women with what’s known as a tramp stamp. This is a tattoo on the lower back, typically paired with a midriff shirt in order to fully display it. Other times only a small piece of it will be seen, and in the eyes of some this greatly increases our desires. In addition, some women prefer to have chest or breast tattoos; the artwork in this location would have a much higher chance of another’s eyes being drawn to it.
