In the story the taste of melon written by Borden Deal. The author is trying to portray the protagonist mainly as a caring person.The protagonist shows many characteristics such as being brave, sympathetic and unselfish, The protagonist's characteristics have a heavy impact on the story.
The protagonist shows that he is a really brave person for many different reasons. In the text the protagonist proves that he that he is committed and he doesn't give up no matter the situation. At first he apologized to Mr. Wills and picked up all the black seeds and showed that his apology wasn't just words but actions that fulfill his apology. “I knelt down on the ground, opened the paper sack and began picking up all the black seeds”(139). He felt bad for what he did because he didn’t realize what he was doing and he didn’t realize how much the seed melon meant to Mr. Wills. Although after, the protagonist helped Mr.Wills grow his seed melon for all of next year. The protagonist felt bad when Mr.Wills said “ ‘they stole my seed melon’ ”(140). The protagonists voice was quieter than ever. He knew that a simple apology couldn’t fix it all, he had to repay Mr.Wills in a nice and helpful way to get Mr. Wills happiness back. The reader could also tell that the protagonist is sympathetic because he also apologized to Willadean because even though he stole Mr.Wills’s melon he knew that he didn’t only affect Mr.Wills but also Willadean, then after he got her forgiveness by showing how nice he really is and how truly sorry he is. “ I looked past him at Willadean and her eyes were smiling too.
