It was believed that an accessible centralized information repository would decrease service times, contributing to improved consumer satisfaction. The innovation was to contrast the existing system of storing and retrieving information from the organization's shared drive, from staff's individual computers, and web-browser favorites. Limited technical knowledge, as well as, limited time and budgetary constraints; however, curtailed the organization's capacity to respond to the need.
In August of 2015, this writer proposed to create a housing resource database as part of his Project-based placement. The basic requirements for the project were to create a database that was accessible, low or no cost, and easy to maintain. Without it, the group may feel "like a ship with no one at the helm" (Fernandez, 1997, p. 1). An agenda was not sent our prior to the meeting; however, at the start of the meeting participants were given copies. Present at the meeting were the Nursing Facility Transitions (NFT) Coordinator, a Benefits Counselor Alliance of Information and Referral (AIRS) certified I&R Specialist, and this writer, Employment Navigator, also, AIRS certified. Absent from the meeting was the Assistant Technology Trainer.
The discussion started with a brief statement of the purpose and goals of the group: to discuss the use of the database and later implementation. It was followed by an open-ended question, directed at no one in particular: "What are your thoughts regarding the database." The NFT Coordinator scanned the agenda, look up, and replied, "It' pretty nice. A real time saver." She went on to explain that the ability to filter searches to produce only what was needed was …The I&R Specialist expressed similar satisfaction, based on observation, but admitted she had not used it to provide service to a consumer. She explained that she was happy to have it, but had not yet broken the habit of searching the internet for resources, something she had done for more than 15 years.
