The textbook connects to we learned in class in the section where it discusses different problems which cant be dealt with during a situation. This relates to what we learned in class because it remind of the video we watched with the children receiving occupational therapy. For instance, in this section it described the how to deal with chronic talker, which is the person in the group who is often characterized as the persistent rambling and reputation. It also described dominator, which is the person who wants to rule the group and control it. These two problems reminded of the child Braden in the task group video. In the video, Braden always had something to any time Cheryl the occupational therapist had something to talk about. In …show more content…
The first important concept that should be remembered is establishing focus. In order to establish focus the leaders can use different activities and exercises such as visual aids and have members write or draw something. Visual aids can be posters, charts, or diagrams. Where as writing or drawing activities can be anything from having members draw on a whiteboard or having them write a list of something. The second important concept that should be remembered is how the leader can hold focus. In order to hold focus the leader has to cut members off. It is very important for the leader to act quick because the longer the leader waits to bring the back to topic the harder it will be get members energy and attention off the new person or topic. Another way to hold the group focus is to conduct a group exercise or use a prop. The third important concept that should be remembered is that there are specific leadership tactics that should be used during the middle stage of an education group. For instance, the group leader must pay attention to shifting from giving information, to facilitating discussion, and back to giving more information. By following these step the leader keeps the group flowing and it increase the chances of helping members learn and apply their new knowledge to their lives. The key is for the leader to provide enough information and enough sharing and enough discussion time. The fourth important concept that should be remembered is that when leading a group the leader must be prepared to deal with members in a number of situations. For example, one problem that typically arises in a group is having a member who is a distractor. This member is usually seeking attention or is avoiding looking at oneself. They also try to get the group off task by bring up unrelated subjects or asking questions that are not relevant. Having a member who is a distractor can be very

There are many traits that conform a leader, and there are various types of leaders. To me, a leader inspires people around them with his or her actions. Integrity plays a major role to influence others and also to be trusted. Doing what is right sometimes can be more difficult, but I believe that this will create a better relationship with people around us. To be a good leader trust is essential, from both the leader and the followers.…

The group project with my fellow group members Avery Ezell, DaShawn Gilliam and Ayaka Matsunaga was a success. Our topic focused on mentoring where we decided to partner with the Wicomico Mentoring Project in Salisbury, Maryland. The project provides “adult role models who volunteer to work with students to improve their grades, attendance and behaviors” (Wicomico County Public Schools). The coordinator Mark Thompson was more than glad to become our mentor to help our group make an impact on his organization. In addition, Professor Melany Trenary was a part of the project where she became another mentor.…

It is time for small group differentiated instruction. The teacher calls over a group of learners to the table. The learners pick books out of a bin of books that the group has already read in prior meetings. The teacher picks one of the learners to listen to as they read one of the books. As the learner begins to read the teacher notices that the learner is reading very slow and word for word.…

An effective leader is the first one to get up and the last one to eat and the last one to bed. A true leader is someone who doesn’t undertake the strenuous job of leading for the glory and admiration, but for the sense of joy and accomplishment his team feels afterward. Through my experiences with Venture Crew, a co-ed branch of the Boy Scouts, I have learned firsthand the definition of servant leadership; putting your groups’ wellbeing over your own benefit. Leaders shouldn’t bark orders or only oversee the work, leaders need to work with their team and pitch in to help reach the goal. When I was as NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training), I learned how to cultivate my ability to be a leader; you have to listen to everyone in the group in order to find common ground to help facilitate the group’s actions.…

Gay men may have many trust issues even if they do not have HIV/AIDS, but compound the issues with having an illness that has much stigma and revulsion connected to it by the general public can lead to an individual have very little trust of others. Therefore, it is imperative to create a trusting atmosphere within the frame work of the group. The first thing that I would convey is confidence and a true aspect of caring about the group during pregroup and each subsequent group with emphasis during the first meeting, by going over confidentiality, making it clear that group is a safe place to share, informing the members of their rights and responsibilities (keeping what they heard and who they see in group confidential), and priming members for a positive experience. My goal is to be organized, empathetic, and attentive to the individual and group concerns by actively listening. For example; by modeling unconditional positive regard for the participants and by being free to disclose my personal thoughts and feelings in a genuine…

As well these videos and articles helped teach us on how to apply these qualities of being a good engineering leader in a real world situation. One article that I remember very well was Jim Collins “Good to Great” article. In this article it talked about how a group project can be similar to a flywheel. Now a fly wheel is a very large wheel, that takes a while to get started, and will take an extreme amount of effort to get the flywheel to spin. The Leader is drive shaft of that flywheel, and is there to help motivate or get the group aka the flywheel to get started and moving.…

On November 9th, Erin and I co-facilitated a group discussion around trauma-informed practice as part of our Group Facilitation assignment as second-year nursing students. The process consisted of choosing a peer-reviewed article related to trauma-informed practice, then creating a Facilitation Plan around the article and relevant course theory, and finally facilitating a group discussion. As the next step towards the development of our group facilitation skills, we were assigned to write a critical reflection about the experience of facilitating a group discussion. Through this paper I provided a summary of our group facilitation experience, explored group dynamics, what I perceived as our strengths and challenges, what I have learned from…

Social Work with Groups course is giving me more insight to the other courses that I have taken previously and some of those that I am currently rolled in such as Social Work with Families and Community Development. After reading the textbook and the discussions in class, the theories of group counseling, viewing groups through multicultural lens, leadership qualities and functions, co-facilitator and group development stood out for me and broaden my perception into Social Work as a profession. The first thing that caught my attention this time is that, theories of counseling are also applicable to group counseling. I learned about the theories in my social work practice class last year. This show how important the theories are to me as an emerging social worker.…

Introduction As I reflect on this course and the results of the Questionnaires, Reflection, and Action Worksheets I have learned many aspects of leadership. I have analyzed the definition of leadership and now have a clearer understanding of it. According to, Introduction to Leadership; concepts and practice, by Peter Northouse (2015), leadership can be composed of many variables such as relationship, trait, ability, skill, behavior, and influence process. He also elaborates on how the “leadership of an individual can be used to influence a group to accomplish a common goal”. In addition, he discusses how leadership is not the same as management (Northouse, 2015, pp. 3-7).…

I was fortunate enough to attend the 2016 H. W. Sumners Leadership Conference where I would have the opportunity to meet a unique pool of influential individuals. Most of my leadership experiences had come from group projects with students who I were familiar with, and the conference gave me the chance to become a team with strangers from across the United States and Mexico. I was not aware of how much I was actually going to get out of the conference. Through the elective workshops, I learned much more about my leadership style and who I could become as a leader. Through the speakers, I learned about the power of creating a vision and pursuing with unyielding faith.…

In past group leader assignments, leaders have been assigned five questions to focus the group discussion on. In both of my groups (both in part one and part two of the course), I have frequently veered off those questions and into discussions beyond the lecture material. This was due to the questions assigned being undebatable at times and too straightforward. That was why I enjoyed creating my own question for this group assignment. This report analyzes the effectiveness of my question in my group leader assignment for the understanding of course material.…
