My topic today is “Should Victoria police carry Taser guns?”
On March 18, 2012, Brazilian student Roberto Curti tragically died in Sydney. He had stolen only two packets of biscuits and as a result, he was chased by 6 police officers. They fired Tasers at him 14 times each delivering a charge up to 50,000 volts to his body, more than enough to stop his heart from beating. Curti’s death is at least the fifth death in Australia after a Taser shooting. It is statistically proven that Tasers are being misused once in every seven cases in Australia. Tasers have been entrenched in our society since 2002, ever since they became popular and it's being used by police so much that it has become part of our country's fabric, but it doesn’t have to be, it shouldn't be. The purpose of my speech today is to make the case that Victoria police should not carry Taser guns. I'm going to talk about three different components:
1. Tasers are not a cure-all for all problems such as catching criminals or police brutality. …show more content…
Tasers are difficult to use in close range situations and it is only effective if the two barbs in the gun come in contact with skin. If the suspect is wearing layers of clothing then the barbs might not be able to reach the skin, making the weapon useless. It is proven that there is a higher chance of stopping criminals when police use some level of force such as a gun compared to a less lethal force. If the suspect is facing you with a , you may get to employ only one option before he deploys on you. That's why cops will usually go for their firearm in these situations. The only time the police needs to be shooting is when there is an absolute matter of life and death and Tasers are not a tool for such situations. Tasers are also extremely dangerous if deployed on a suspect with heart problems as it can easily kill
